🔧 Canyon - Rear Door Lock Actuator Replacement

The rear door lock actuator is the small electric motor/latch unit that locks and unlocks the rear-hinged extended-cab door. On your Canyon, the rear door actuator is serviced from inside the rear door by removing the interior trim panel, disconnecting the latch cables/electrical connector, and replacing the latch/actuator assembly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

Assumption: This applies to the extended-cab rear access door, not the front door.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging door electrical connectors to avoid short circuits.
  • ⚠️ Work with the door fully open and supported so it cannot swing closed while your hands are inside the door.
  • ⚠️ Door sheet metal edges are sharp; wear cut-resistant gloves.
  • ⚠️ Do not tear the water shield. It prevents rainwater from reaching the cabin.
  • ⚠️ Keep screws organized by location. Door hardware may look similar but fit differently.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Canyon on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the front door first, then open the rear access door fully.
  • Lower the window if equipped, then turn the ignition off.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
  • Place painter’s tape near painted edges around the door opening to help prevent scratches.
  • A trim panel removal tool is a plastic pry tool used to pop clips loose without damaging the door panel.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Rear Door Trim Panel

  • Put on cut-resistant gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully remove any small screw covers in the rear door trim panel.
  • Use a 7mm socket and ratchet handle to remove the trim panel screws.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to pry around the lower and side edges of the panel until the plastic retainers pop free.
  • Lift the trim panel upward to release it from the upper door edge.
  • Disconnect any electrical connector by pressing the release tab with a small flat-blade screwdriver, then set the panel aside.
  • Pull clips straight out.

Step 2: Peel Back the Water Shield

  • Use a plastic scraper to slowly separate the black butyl adhesive from the door.
  • Peel the water shield back only far enough to reach the latch area at the rear edge of the door.
  • If the butyl stretches or gets dirty, plan to reseal it with new butyl sealing tape.
  • Do not cut the shield.

Step 3: Disconnect the Actuator Electrical Connector

  • Use a work light to locate the lock actuator/latch assembly inside the rear edge of the access door.
  • Use your fingers or a small flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector lock tab.
  • Pull the electrical connector straight off the actuator.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 4: Disconnect the Lock and Handle Rods/Cables

  • Look at how each rod or cable attaches before removing it.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to rotate any plastic retaining clip away from the rod.
  • Lift the rod out of the latch lever by hand or with needle-nose pliers.
  • If your Canyon uses a cable end, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to release the cable housing from its bracket, then unhook the cable end from the lever.
  • Take a photo first.

Step 5: Remove the Rear Door Latch/Actuator Assembly

  • Support the latch with one hand from inside the door.
  • Use a Torx T30 driver to remove the latch screws from the rear edge of the door.
  • Carefully guide the latch/actuator assembly out through the access opening.
  • If it catches, stop and check for a still-connected rod, cable, or wiring connector.

Step 6: Install the New Rear Door Lock Actuator/Latch

  • Compare the new rear door lock actuator/latch assembly with the old one before installing it.
  • Guide the new assembly into the door by hand.
  • Start the latch screws by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a Torx T30 driver to snug the screws evenly.
  • Use a torque wrench foot-pound with Torx T30 bit to tighten the latch screws to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect Rods, Cables, and Wiring

  • Use needle-nose pliers to place each rod back into its matching latch lever.
  • Snap each plastic retaining clip fully closed over the rod.
  • If equipped with cables, hook each cable end into its lever, then snap the cable housing into the bracket.
  • Push the electrical connector onto the actuator until it clicks.
  • A click means locked.

Step 8: Test the Latch Before Reinstalling the Trim

  • Use a 10mm socket to temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Keep your fingers clear of the latch.
  • Use the power lock switch or key fob to lock and unlock the rear door.
  • Use the inside and outside handles to verify the latch releases correctly.
  • If the actuator does not move, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to confirm the connector is fully seated.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable again before reassembly.

Step 9: Reseal the Water Shield

  • Press the water shield back into its original position by hand.
  • Use butyl sealing tape anywhere the original seal no longer sticks.
  • Use a plastic scraper handle to lightly press the seal all the way around.
  • Make sure no wiring or rods are trapped behind the shield.

Step 10: Reinstall the Rear Door Trim Panel

  • Reconnect any door trim electrical connector by hand until it clicks.
  • Hang the upper edge of the trim panel onto the door.
  • Line up the plastic retainers with their holes.
  • Press around the edges by hand until the clips snap in.
  • Use a 7mm socket and torque wrench inch-pound to reinstall the trim screws to Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall any screw covers by pressing them in by hand.

Step 11: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use a torque wrench foot-pound with 10mm socket to tighten the battery terminal nut to Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Lock and unlock the doors several times using the key fob and the interior lock switch.
  • ✅ Open and close the front and rear access doors in the correct order to confirm smooth operation.
  • ✅ Check that the rear door warning light/message does not stay on.
  • ✅ Listen for rattles inside the rear door during a short drive.
  • ✅ If the battery was disconnected, reset the clock and one-touch window function if needed by fully lowering and fully raising the window, then holding the switch up for 2 seconds.
