- Open the rear door you are repairing fully.
- Lower the rear window glass fully using the power window switch before disconnecting the battery.
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the 12-volt auxiliary battery using a 10mm socket.
- The 12-volt battery is in the rear cargo area on your RAV4 Hybrid.
- A trim panel removal tool is a flat plastic lever used to pop panels loose without scratching them.
- Butyl tape is sticky black sealing tape used to reseal the plastic moisture barrier inside the door.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Protect the Door Trim
- Use painter’s tape 1-inch width around the door pull trim and switch trim edges.
- Use a small flashlight to look for screw covers and clip locations.
- Take photos before unplugging anything.
Step 2: Remove the Rear Door Switch Panel
- Use a plastic pry tool to gently lift the rear power window switch panel from the armrest.
- Lift from the rear edge first, then work forward.
- Unplug the window switch connector by pressing the release tab with your fingers or a pick tool set.
- Set the switch panel in a safe place.
Step 3: Remove Door Trim Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw inside the door pull area.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw behind the inside door handle trim cover, if equipped.
- Place screws in a magnetic parts tray.
Step 4: Release the Rear Door Trim Panel
- Use a trim panel removal tool set at the lower rear edge of the door panel.
- Pop the trim clips loose one at a time around the bottom and sides of the panel.
- Lift the panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Hold the panel close to the door while you disconnect remaining cables and connectors.
Step 5: Disconnect Handle Cables and Connectors
- Use needle-nose pliers to carefully unclip the inside handle cable ends from the handle lever.
- A Bowden cable is a small cable in a sleeve that pulls the latch when you move the handle.

- Set the door trim panel on a clean, soft surface.
Step 6: Peel Back the Moisture Barrier
- Use a plastic pry tool to gently separate the plastic moisture barrier from the black butyl sealer.
- Peel back only enough barrier to reach the rear door latch area.
- Do not tear the barrier; it keeps rainwater away from the cabin side of the door.
- Warm butyl releases easier.
Step 7: Disconnect the Exterior Handle Rod or Cable
- Use a small flashlight to locate the rod or cable connected to the rear door latch.
- Use needle-nose pliers or a pick tool set to rotate the plastic retainer open.
- Slide the rod or cable end out of the latch lever.
- Do not bend the rod.
Step 8: Unplug the Lock Actuator Connector
- Use your hand to press the electrical connector release tab on the latch/actuator.
- If the tab is tight, use a pick tool set gently on the release tab only.
- Pull the connector straight off the actuator.
Step 9: Remove the Rear Door Latch Bolts
- At the rear edge of the door, use a Torx T30 socket with a ratchet handle 3/8-inch drive to remove the three latch mounting screws.
- Support the latch with your other hand from inside the door.
- Remove the latch/actuator assembly through the access opening in the inner door shell.
Step 10: Compare the New Actuator/Latch Assembly
- Use a small flashlight to compare the new rear door lock actuator/latch assembly to the old one.
- Make sure the connector shape, latch claw, cable bracket, and mounting holes match.
- Transfer any clip or bracket from the old latch using needle-nose pliers, if needed.
Step 11: Install the New Actuator/Latch Assembly
- Guide the new latch/actuator into the door through the access opening.
- Start the three latch screws by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a Torx T30 socket and torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the latch screws.
- Torque to 5.5 Nm (49 in-lbs)
Step 12: Reconnect Cables, Rods, and Connector
- Use needle-nose pliers to reconnect the outside handle rod or cable to the latch lever.
- Snap the plastic retainer closed by hand.
- Reconnect the lock actuator electrical connector until it clicks.
- Pull lightly on the connector to make sure it is locked.
Step 13: Reconnect the 12-Volt Battery for Testing
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative 12-volt battery terminal.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs)
- Keep hands clear of the latch claw.
- Use the key fob or door lock switch to test lock and unlock operation before reinstalling the trim panel.
Step 14: Test Manual Door Operation
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver shaft to simulate the door striker by gently closing the latch claw.
- Pull the inside handle cable by hand to verify the latch releases.
- Pull the outside handle to verify it releases correctly.
- Use the lock switch to confirm the lock blocks and allows release correctly.
- Open the latch claw before shutting the door.
Step 15: Reseal the Moisture Barrier
- Use butyl tape or door vapor barrier sealing tape to repair any gaps in the original sealer.
- Press the plastic moisture barrier firmly back onto the door.
- Use a plastic pry tool handle to gently press the seal flat.
Step 16: Reinstall the Rear Door Trim Panel
- Use your hands to reconnect the inside handle cables to the door trim panel.
- Reconnect all electrical connectors by hand until they click.
- Hang the top of the panel over the window ledge.
- Line up the clips and press around the edges by hand until each clip snaps in.
- Replace broken clips with rear door trim panel clips.
Step 17: Reinstall Screws and Switch Panel
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the door pull screw and inside handle screw.
- Torque to 2.0 Nm (18 in-lbs)
- Plug in the rear window switch connector by hand.
- Press the switch panel down until it snaps into place.
Step 18: Final Door Check
- Use the key fob to lock and unlock the rear door several times.
- Use the interior lock switch to confirm the actuator works smoothly.
- Open the door from inside and outside.
- Close the door gently the first time and make sure it latches normally.
