🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Protect the Door Trim
- Use painter’s tape 1-inch around the inner door handle trim and switch panel edges.
- Put on safety glasses and work gloves.
- Work slowly near soft trim.
Step 2: Remove the Rear Door Switch Panel
- Use a trim panel removal tool set to gently pry up the rear door window switch panel.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver to press the connector locking tab.
- Unplug the window switch connector and set the switch panel aside.
Step 3: Remove Hidden Door Panel Screws
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the screw inside the armrest pull area, depending on fastener style.
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the screw behind the inside door handle trim cover if equipped.

- Set the door panel on a clean towel or soft surface.
Step 6: Peel Back the Water Shield

- Do not remove the whole shield unless needed.
- If the sealant no longer sticks, use butyl sealing tape during reassembly.
- Keep the shield clean.
Step 7: Disconnect the Latch Electrical Connector
- Locate the rear door latch at the back edge of the door.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver to unlock the latch actuator electrical connector tab.
- Pull the connector straight off by the connector body, not the wires.
Step 8: Disconnect the Lock Rods and Release Cables
- Use a pick tool set to flip open the plastic rod retainers at the latch.
- Use needle-nose pliers to slide the rods out of their clips.
- Use needle-nose pliers to release the outside handle cable from the latch lever if equipped.
- Take a quick photo before removing rods so reassembly is easier.
Step 9: Remove the Rear Door Latch/Actuator Assembly
- Use a Torx T30 socket, ratchet handle, and socket extension 6-inch to remove the three latch screws from the rear edge of the door.
- Support the latch with your hand inside the door while removing the last screw.
- Guide the latch/actuator assembly out through the door access opening.
Step 10: Install the New Latch/Actuator Assembly
- Guide the new rear door latch and lock actuator assembly into the door by hand.
- Start all three latch screws by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a Torx T30 socket and torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the latch screws to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect Rods, Cables, and Connector
- Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall each lock rod into its original latch lever.
- Use the pick tool set to snap each plastic rod retainer closed.
- Reconnect the outside handle cable if equipped.
- Push the actuator electrical connector on until it clicks.
Step 12: Function-Test Before Closing the Door
- Use a 10mm socket to temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Use a screwdriver handle or similar blunt tool to rotate the latch closed while the door stays open.
- Use the door switch and key fob to test lock and unlock operation.
- Pull the inside and outside handles to make sure the latch releases correctly.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable again before final reassembly.
- Never slam-test an open latch.
Step 13: Reseal the Water Shield
- Press the water shield back onto the original sealant by hand.
- Use butyl sealing tape anywhere the original sealant no longer sticks.
- Make sure the bottom edge is sealed so rainwater stays inside the door drain path.
Step 14: Reinstall the Door Panel
- Reconnect the inside handle cable using needle-nose pliers.
- Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors by hand until each clicks.
- Hang the upper edge of the panel over the window ledge.
- Align the clips and press around the edges by hand until each clip snaps in.
- Replace broken rear door trim panel clips as needed.
Step 15: Reinstall Screws and Switch Panel
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T20 screwdriver to reinstall the door panel screws.
- Do not overtighten trim screws; snug is enough.
- Plug in the rear window switch connector by hand.
- Press the switch panel down until it snaps flush.
Step 16: Reconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet handle to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the terminal securely; do not overtighten.
- Check that the cable cannot twist by hand.
