🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove Small Trim Covers
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver wrapped with painter’s tape to remove the small screw covers in the rear door pull handle and behind the inside door handle.
- Use gentle pressure so the plastic covers do not crack.
- Tip: Tape protects the trim.
Step 2: Remove Door Panel Screws
- Use a 7mm socket and ratchet to remove the exposed door trim screws.
- Use an 8mm socket if your lower door panel fasteners are the larger style.
- Place all screws on a shop towel in removal order.
Step 3: Release the Door Trim Panel
- Use a trim panel removal tool at the lower rear edge of the door panel.
- Pry outward to release the first clip, then work around the bottom and sides.
- Once the clips are released, lift the panel straight upward off the window ledge.
- Do not pull the panel far away yet because electrical connectors and cables are still attached.
Step 4: Disconnect Door Panel Wiring and Handle Cable

- Unplug the window switch, lock switch, courtesy light, and speaker connector if attached to the trim panel.

- If the butyl adhesive stretches, use a shop towel to keep it from sticking to the trim.
Step 6: Disconnect the Latch Electrical Connector
- Look inside the rear edge of the door for the latch/actuator connector.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to unlock the connector tab.
- Pull the connector straight off the latch assembly.
Step 7: Disconnect Lock Rods and Cables
- Use needle-nose pliers or a pick tool to rotate the plastic retaining clips off the latch rods.
- Lift the rods out of the latch levers.
- Use a pick tool to release any cable retainers, then unhook the cable ends from the latch.
- Take a quick photo before removing anything if you want an easy reference for reassembly.
- Tip: Photos prevent cable mix-ups.
Step 8: Remove the Rear Door Latch Fasteners
- Open the rear door fully.
- Use a Torx T30 socket and ratchet to remove the latch screws from the rear edge of the door.
- Support the latch with one hand inside the door as the last screw comes out.
Step 9: Remove the Latch and Actuator Assembly
- Guide the latch/actuator assembly out through the access opening in the inner door shell.

Step 10: Install the New Latch and Actuator Assembly
- Position the new latch/actuator assembly inside the rear door.

- Use a Torx T30 socket and torque wrench to tighten the latch screws to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 11: Reconnect Rods, Cables, and Wiring
- Use needle-nose pliers to insert the lock rods into the correct latch levers.
- Rotate each plastic retaining clip closed until it snaps into place.
- Hook the cable ends into the latch levers and snap the cable housings into their brackets.
- Plug in the latch electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 12: Test the Latch Before Reinstalling the Panel
- Use a 10mm socket to temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Use the key fob or door lock switch to lock and unlock the rear door.
- Use a screwdriver shaft to simulate the door striker by clicking the latch closed.
- Pull the inside and outside handles to confirm the latch releases correctly.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable again before reconnecting trim panel wiring.
- Tip: Test before closing the door.
Step 13: Reinstall the Water Shield
- Press the water shield back onto the door using your hands.
- Use butyl sealing tape where the original adhesive no longer sticks.
- Make sure there are no gaps along the lower edge.
Step 14: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel
- Reconnect the inside handle cable by hooking the cable end into the handle lever and snapping the retainer closed.
- Reconnect all electrical connectors by hand until they click.
- Hang the door panel over the upper window ledge.
- Align the clips with the holes in the door.
- Press around the edges by hand to snap the clips into place.
Step 15: Install Door Panel Screws and Covers
- Use a 7mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the door panel screws.
- Use an 8mm socket if your lower fasteners use the larger size.
- Tighten trim screws snug only; do not overtighten plastic trim.
- Use your fingers to snap the small trim covers back into place.
Step 16: Reconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the battery terminal nut to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
