Replacing a radiator hose on your Accord means draining some coolant, removing the old hose, installing a new hose with secure clamps, then refilling and bleeding the cooling system. The upper and lower radiator hoses are serviced in a similar way, but the lower hose usually drains more coolant and is harder to reach.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Accord on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels if raising the front of the vehicle.
  • Let the engine cool completely before touching the radiator cap, hoses, or coolant reservoir.
  • A hose clamp is the metal ring that squeezes the hose tightly onto the radiator or engine fitting.
  • A hose pick is a small curved tool used to gently break the old hose loose without cutting the fitting.
  • Use only Honda-compatible coolant. Mixing the wrong coolant can cause deposits and cooling-system problems.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the Front If Needed

  • If replacing the lower radiator hose, use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Accord at the front jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle securely on jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Keep the rear wheels blocked with wheel chocks.
  • If replacing only the upper radiator hose, raising the vehicle may not be needed.

Step 2: Remove Lower Splash Shield If Needed

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the splash shield bolts under the front bumper area.
  • Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove plastic push clips without breaking them.
  • Set the splash shield and fasteners aside in order.

Step 3: Remove the Radiator Cap

  • Confirm the engine is cold by touching the upper radiator hose with nitrile gloves.
  • Slowly remove the radiator cap by hand.
  • If you hear pressure release, stop and wait longer before opening fully.
  • Cold engine only. No exceptions.

Step 4: Position the Drain Pan

  • Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area or under the hose you are removing.
  • Use shop towels around the hose connection to control spills.

Step 5: Drain Enough Coolant

  • If using the radiator drain plug, loosen it by hand or carefully with a flat-blade screwdriver if it has a slotted head.
  • Drain coolant until the level is below the hose you are replacing.
  • If replacing the lower radiator hose, expect most of the radiator coolant to drain.
  • Close the radiator drain plug by hand once draining slows. Do not overtighten plastic drain plugs.

Step 6: Release the Hose Clamps

  • Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze each spring clamp and slide it back onto the hose.
  • If your replacement hose uses worm-gear clamps, use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the clamp screw.
  • Move both clamps far enough away from the hose ends so the hose can slide off.

Step 7: Break the Old Hose Loose

  • Use a hose pick tool to gently loosen the hose from the radiator neck or engine fitting.
  • Work around the hose end carefully. Do not gouge plastic radiator fittings.
  • Twist the hose by hand while wearing nitrile gloves until it breaks free.
  • Never pry hard on plastic radiator necks.

Step 8: Remove the Old Hose

  • Pull the old hose off by hand and allow remaining coolant to drain into the drain pan 2-gallon minimum.
  • Use shop towels to wipe the hose fittings clean.
  • Inspect the radiator neck and engine fitting for cracks, corrosion, or leftover rubber.

Step 9: Install the New Hose

  • Compare the new radiator hose to the old hose for shape, length, and bend direction.
  • Slide the radiator hose clamps onto the new hose before installing it.
  • Push the hose fully onto both fittings by hand until it seats against the raised stop bead.
  • The stop bead is the raised ring that keeps the hose from sliding off under pressure.

Step 10: Position and Tighten the Clamps

  • Use hose clamp pliers to position spring clamps behind the raised stop bead on each fitting.
  • If using worm-gear clamps, tighten evenly with a flat-blade screwdriver until snug.
  • Do not overtighten worm-gear clamps on plastic radiator fittings because they can crack.
  • No torque specification is published for standard spring hose clamps; clamp must sit squarely behind the stop bead.

Step 11: Refill the Cooling System

  • Install a coolant funnel kit into the radiator fill neck.
  • Pour Honda-compatible premixed coolant slowly into the funnel until the radiator is full.
  • Fill the coolant reservoir to the MAX line by hand.
  • Squeeze the upper radiator hose by hand several times to help move trapped air toward the fill neck.

Step 12: Bleed Air from the System

  • Leave the coolant funnel kit installed with coolant in the funnel.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to maximum temperature with the blower on low.
  • Let the engine idle while watching the coolant level in the funnel.
  • Add Honda-compatible premixed coolant as the level drops.
  • When the cooling fans cycle on and warm air comes from the vents, most trapped air has been removed.

Step 13: Check for Leaks

  • Use a flashlight if available, or visually inspect both hose ends carefully.
  • Look for dripping, wetness, or coolant smell around the new hose connections.
  • If a clamp leaks, shut the engine off, let it cool, then reposition the clamp using hose clamp pliers or tighten with a flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 14: Reinstall the Splash Shield

  • Use a plastic trim clip remover to align plastic clips if needed.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the splash shield bolts.
  • Tighten splash shield fasteners snug by hand tool only; do not overtighten plastic clips or small shield screws.

Step 15: Lower the Vehicle

  • If raised, use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift slightly off the stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Accord slowly and remove the wheel chocks.

✅ After Repair

  • Let the engine cool completely, then recheck the radiator and coolant reservoir levels.
  • Top off with Honda-compatible premixed coolant if the level drops after cooling.
  • Take a short drive while watching the temperature gauge.
  • After the drive, inspect the hose ends again for leaks once the engine is cool.
  • Dispose of old coolant safely at a recycling or hazardous-waste facility. Do not pour it on the ground or into drains.
