🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Let the Engine Cool
- Use your hand near, not on, the upper radiator hose to check for heat.
- If the hose area feels warm, wait longer before starting.
- Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand only after the engine is fully cool.
- Cold engine only.
Step 2: Remove Any Splash Shield Access Panel
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove plastic push clips if equipped.
- Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket with a 3/8-inch ratchet to remove lower shield fasteners if they block access.
- Set all clips and bolts aside in order so they go back in the same spots.
Step 3: Drain Enough Coolant
- Place the 2-gallon drain pan under the radiator drain area or under the hose you are replacing.
- If using the radiator drain, open it carefully by hand or with slip-joint pliers only if needed.
- Drain coolant until the level is below the hose being replaced.
- If the drain is hard to access, use hose clamp pliers and remove the lower end of the hose slowly, letting coolant flow into the pan.
- Go slow to avoid spills.
Step 4: Release the Hose Clamps
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze each spring clamp open.
- Slide each clamp several inches back onto the hose.
- If screw-style clamps are installed, use a flathead screwdriver to loosen them.
- Do not pry hard on plastic radiator fittings because they can crack.
Step 5: Remove the Old Radiator Hose
- Twist the hose by hand to break it loose from the radiator or engine fitting.
- If the hose is stuck, use a pick tool to gently work around the hose edge.
- Pull the hose straight off once it breaks free.
- If replacing the lower hose, keep the drain pan directly underneath because more coolant will come out.
- Twist first, pull second.
Step 6: Clean the Hose Connections
- Use clean shop towels to wipe the radiator and engine hose fittings.
- Remove old coolant residue, dirt, or rubber pieces.
- Inspect the fittings for cracks, corrosion, or rough edges before installing the new hose.
Step 7: Install the New Hose
- Compare the new radiator hose to the old hose before installing it.
- Slide the new clamps onto the hose first.
- Push the hose fully onto each fitting by hand until it seats past the raised bead on the fitting.
- A raised bead is the lip on the fitting that helps keep the hose from sliding off.
- Use hose clamp pliers to position each clamp behind the raised bead.
- If using screw-style clamps, tighten with a flathead screwdriver until snug. Do not overtighten.
Step 8: Close the Drain and Reinstall Shields
- Close the radiator drain by hand if it was opened.
- Use the 8mm socket or 10mm socket with the 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall any splash shield fasteners.
- Reinstall plastic clips with the plastic trim clip remover or by pressing them in by hand.
- Torque small splash shield fasteners to 5-8 Nm (44-71 in-lbs) if threaded fasteners are used.
Step 9: Refill the Cooling System
- Use a funnel to fill the coolant reservoir with the correct Ford-approved coolant mixture.
- If using concentrate, mix coolant with distilled water to a 50/50 mix unless the bottle is already premixed.
- Fill to the cold fill mark on the coolant reservoir.
- Install the coolant reservoir cap by hand.
Step 10: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Start the engine and let it idle with the heater set to full hot and fan on low.
- Watch the temperature gauge. It should rise normally and stay steady.
- Let the engine idle until the upper radiator hose gets warm, showing coolant is circulating.
- Shut the engine off and let it cool completely.
- Use the funnel to top off the coolant reservoir to the cold fill mark after it cools.
Step 11: Check Coolant Strength
- Use a coolant hydrometer or refractometer to confirm the coolant freeze protection is correct.
- A refractometer is a small tester that checks coolant concentration using a drop of coolant.
- For normal use, a 50/50 coolant mix is the usual target.
