- Park your Corolla on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool completely, ideally for several hours.
- Open the hood and locate the hose you are replacing.
- The upper radiator hose runs from the top of the radiator to the engine.
- The lower radiator hose runs from the bottom of the radiator toward the engine/water pump area.
- Place a drain pan under the radiator drain area before loosening any hose.

Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Cool the engine and relieve pressure
- Use your hand near the radiator hose without grabbing it first. Make sure there is no heat coming off the hose.
- Use a clean shop towel to slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap.
- If you hear hissing, stop and wait longer. Hissing means the cooling system is still pressurized.
- Cold engine only.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield if needed
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower shield fasteners if the radiator drain or lower hose is blocked.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove plastic clips without breaking them.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
Step 3: Drain enough coolant
- Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
- Use your fingers or needle-nose pliers to carefully open the radiator drain cock if accessible.
- Drain coolant until the level is below the hose you are replacing.
- If replacing the lower hose, drain more coolant because it sits low on the system.
- Close the radiator drain cock by hand snugly. Do not overtighten plastic parts.
Step 4: Loosen the hose clamps
- A hose clamp is the metal ring that squeezes the hose tight to stop leaks.
- If your Corolla has spring-style clamps, use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the clamp tabs together and slide the clamp back onto the hose.
- If replacement clamps are worm-gear style, use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the screw.
- Move both clamps away from the hose ends.
Step 5: Remove the old radiator hose
- Use your hand to twist the hose gently to break it loose.
- If it is stuck, use a flat-head screwdriver carefully between the hose and metal neck to loosen the edge.
- Do not pry hard against the radiator neck. It can crack.
- Pull the hose off both ends and keep the drain pan underneath for leftover coolant.
- Twist first, pull second.
Step 6: Clean the hose connection points
- Use clean shop towels to wipe the radiator neck and engine-side neck clean.
- Check both necks for old rubber, corrosion, or cracks.
- Do not use sandpaper or sharp tools on plastic radiator fittings.
Step 7: Install the new radiator hose
- Compare the new hose to the old hose. The bends and length should match.
- Slide the clamps onto the new hose before installing the hose.
- Push the hose fully onto the radiator neck and engine-side neck by hand.
- The hose end should sit past the raised bead on each neck. The bead is the small ridge that helps hold the hose in place.
- Use hose clamp pliers to position spring clamps behind the raised bead.
- For worm-gear clamps, use a flat-head screwdriver to tighten until snug. Do not crush the hose.
Step 8: Refill the cooling system
- Use a funnel with narrow spout to add Toyota-compatible pink Super Long Life coolant premix to the coolant reservoir.
- Fill to the FULL line on the reservoir when the engine is cold.
- If the radiator has a cap, fill the radiator first, then fill the reservoir to the FULL line.
- Use clean shop towels to wipe spilled coolant right away.
Step 9: Bleed air from the cooling system
- Leave the coolant reservoir cap loose at first.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Set the cabin heater to full hot and fan to low. This helps coolant move through the heater core.
- Watch the temperature gauge. It should stay in the normal range.
- As air bubbles leave the system, add coolant with the funnel with narrow spout to keep the level near the FULL mark.
- When bubbles stop and the upper hose gets warm, install the cap securely by hand.
Step 10: Reinstall the lower splash shield
- Use the plastic trim clip remover by hand to align any plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the lower shield fasteners.
- Tighten small splash shield bolts snug only. Typical torque is Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

- Let your Corolla idle until fully warm, then check both hose ends for leaks.
- Take a short 5-10 minute drive while watching the temperature gauge.
- After the engine cools completely, recheck the coolant level and top off to the FULL line if needed.
- Check the hose again the next day for seepage around the clamps.
- Dispose of old coolant at a recycling center or parts store that accepts used coolant. Do not pour it on the ground or into drains.
