  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
  • 🌡️ Work only when the engine is completely cool, ideally after sitting several hours.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Let the Engine Cool

  • Use your hand near, not on, the radiator area to check for heat.
  • Wait until the upper radiator hose is cool and not pressurized.
  • Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand only after the engine is fully cool.
  • Cool engine only. No exceptions.

Step 2: Remove the Front Under-Cover if Needed

  • If you need access to the lower radiator hose or radiator drain, use a plastic trim clip remover to remove the splash shield clips.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 to remove any screw-style fasteners.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove any 10mm under-cover bolts.
  • Set the cover and fasteners aside in order.

Step 3: Place the Drain Pan

  • Slide a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • Place clean shop towels nearby in case coolant spills.
  • If replacing the upper radiator hose only, you may still lose coolant, so keep the drain pan under the hose connection.

Step 4: Drain Some Coolant

  • Use your hand or a flat-blade screwdriver 6-inch to open the radiator drain plug if accessible.
  • Drain enough coolant so the level drops below the hose you are replacing.
  • For the upper hose, drain roughly 1 quart.
  • For the lower hose, drain most of the radiator.
  • Close the radiator drain plug by hand until snug. If a torque spec is needed, tighten gently only; the plastic drain plug can crack.

Step 5: Mark Hose Position

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe the hose ends so you can see clearly.
  • Note how far the hose sits on each pipe before removal.
  • If helpful, use the edge of a shop towel to mark the old hose position visually before removing it.

Step 6: Move the Hose Clamps Back

  • Use hose clamp pliers 45-degree to squeeze each spring clamp open.
  • Slide each clamp back several inches onto the hose.
  • If the clamp is hard to reach, use slip-joint pliers 10-inch carefully.
  • Do not pry against the radiator plastic neck. It can crack.

Step 7: Break the Hose Loose

  • Use your hand to twist the hose gently at the connection.
  • If it is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver 6-inch to carefully lift the hose edge only enough to break the seal.
  • Do not cut or gouge the metal or plastic hose neck.
  • Twist first, pull second.

Step 8: Remove the Old Hose

  • Pull the hose off by hand while keeping the drain pan underneath.
  • Remove the hose from the radiator side and engine side.
  • Use clean shop towels to wipe coolant from nearby parts.
  • Compare the old hose to the new hose before installing it. The bends and length must match.

Step 9: Clean the Hose Connections

  • Use clean shop towels to wipe the radiator neck and engine-side pipe.
  • Check both connection points for old rubber stuck to the surface.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver 6-inch very gently if you need to remove stuck rubber residue.
  • Do not scratch the sealing surface.

Step 10: Install the New Hose

  • Slide the clamps onto the new hose first by hand.
  • Push the new hose fully onto the radiator and engine connections by hand.
  • Make sure the hose sits past the raised bead on each pipe. The bead is the small ridge that helps hold the hose on.
  • Route the hose exactly like the original so it does not rub the fan, belt area, or sharp brackets.

Step 11: Position the Clamps

  • Use hose clamp pliers 45-degree to move each clamp into its original position.
  • Place each clamp behind the raised bead, not on top of it.
  • If using screw-style replacement clamps, use a flat-blade screwdriver 6-inch or 10mm socket to tighten evenly.
  • For screw-style clamps, tighten to Torque to 3-4 Nm (27-35 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten screw clamps on plastic radiator fittings.

Step 12: Refill the Cooling System

  • Install a funnel with long neck into the coolant reservoir fill opening.
  • Pour Honda-compatible blue coolant premix 50/50 slowly until the reservoir reaches the MAX line.
  • If your radiator has a cap, fill the radiator directly first, then fill the reservoir to the MAX line.
  • Use clean shop towels to wipe spills immediately.

Step 13: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Start the engine and set the cabin heater to full hot with the fan on low.
  • Let the engine idle while watching the temperature gauge.
  • As the thermostat opens, the coolant level may drop. Add coolant with the funnel with long neck as needed.
  • Watch for steady heat from the vents. This helps confirm coolant is flowing through the heater core.
  • Install the cap by hand once the coolant level stabilizes.

Step 14: Check for Leaks

  • Use a flashlight if available and inspect both hose ends closely.
  • Use clean shop towels to dry the area, then watch for fresh coolant.
  • If a clamp leaks, shut the engine off, let it cool, then reposition the clamp with hose clamp pliers 45-degree.

Step 15: Reinstall the Under-Cover

  • Use a plastic trim clip remover to line up the splash shield clips.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver #2 to reinstall screw-style fasteners.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and torque wrench inch-pound to reinstall 10mm bolts.
  • Tighten small under-cover bolts to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Let your Pilot reach normal operating temperature while parked.
  • 🌡️ Confirm the temperature gauge stays normal and does not climb toward hot.
  • 🔥 Confirm the heater blows warm air at idle.
  • 💧 Check the repaired hose area again after a short drive.
  • 🧴 After the engine cools completely, recheck the coolant reservoir and top off to the MAX line if needed.
  • ♻️ Take old coolant to a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used coolant. Do not pour it on the ground or into a drain.
