🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the clamp from the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Place a fender cover over the painted bodywork.
Step 2: Remove Power Steering Fluid
- Remove the reservoir cap and use a 500ml fluid transfer syringe to extract as much old fluid as possible.
- Transfer the fluid into the drain pan. Do not reuse it.
- Reinstall the reservoir cap loosely to keep dirt out.
Step 3: Remove the Serpentine Belt
- Compare your photograph with the under-hood belt-routing label before releasing the belt.
- Fit the 14mm socket and serpentine-belt tensioner tool onto the automatic tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner clockwise slowly to release belt tension. An automatic tensioner is the spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
- Slide the belt off the power steering pump pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Remove the belt if it is being replaced. Otherwise, keep it away from spilled fluid.
- Inspect the tensioner and idler pulleys by hand. They should turn smoothly without looseness or grinding.
Step 4: Disconnect the Pump Hoses
- Position the drain pan below the power steering pump and surround the connections with shop towels.
- Use hose-clamp pliers to release the clamp on the large low-pressure suction hose.
- Twist the hose gently with hose-clamp pliers or a flat-blade screwdriver, then pull it straight from the pump fitting. Do not cut or puncture the hose.
- Close the hose with a rubber line plug to reduce leakage and contamination.
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen the pressure-line union bolt at the pump.
- Remove the union bolt, pressure-line fitting, and both sealing washers. Discard the old washers.
- Plug the open line and pump port with rubber line plugs.
Step 5: Remove the Pump
- Support the pump by hand before removing its final fastener.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the power steering pump mounting bolts.
- Note each bolt's position because the bolts may differ in length.
- Guide the pump upward and out of the engine compartment without bending the pressure line.
- Photograph every bracket before separating it.
Step 6: Transfer the Pulley and Brackets
- Place the old pump on a stable work surface.
- Install the power steering pulley puller fully into the pulley hub. A pulley puller removes the press-fit pulley without bending it.
- Turn the puller with the appropriate tools supplied in the puller set until the pulley slides off the shaft.
- Do not grip the pulley rim or strike the shaft with a hammer.
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket, as fitted, to transfer any hose bracket or mounting bracket from the old pump.
- Compare both pumps. Confirm that the ports, mounting points, shaft length, and pulley offset match.
- Lubricate the replacement pump shaft lightly with clean Dexron-compatible ATF.
- Use the power steering pulley installer to press the pulley onto the new pump shaft.
- Stop when the end of the shaft is flush with the face of the pulley hub, matching the original pump. Do not pull the pulley on with a mounting bolt.
Step 7: Install the Replacement Pump
- Position the new pump against its mounting bracket and start every mounting bolt by hand.
- Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the pump mounting bolts evenly to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
- Use a 12mm socket or 14mm socket to reinstall any removed line brackets in their original positions.
- Make sure the pulley aligns with the adjacent drive pulleys before continuing.
Step 8: Reconnect the Hydraulic Lines
- Remove the plugs from the pressure line and pump port without allowing dirt to enter.
- Place one new sealing washer on each side of the pressure-line fitting.
- Start the union bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 22mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the pressure-line union bolt to 52 Nm (38 ft-lbs).
- Remove the plug from the suction hose. Inspect the hose end for cracks, swelling, or hardening.
- Push the suction hose fully onto the pump fitting and install the clamp in its original position with hose-clamp pliers.
- Confirm that neither hose is twisted or touching the belt or pulley.
Step 9: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the belt around every pulley according to the under-hood diagram, leaving the easiest smooth pulley until last.
- Use the 14mm socket and serpentine-belt tensioner tool to rotate the tensioner clockwise.
- Slip the belt over the final pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
- Use a flashlight and visually confirm that every belt rib is seated in every grooved pulley.
- Turn the pump pulley by hand and verify that it does not rub, wobble, or bind.
Step 10: Fill and Bleed the System with the Engine Off
- Use a 3-ton floor jack at the specified front-center jacking point and place 3-ton jack stands beneath the front frame support points.
- Keep the rear wheels chocked and raise both front tires clear of the ground.
- Fill the reservoir to the COLD MAX mark with Dexron II or Dexron III specification ATF.
- With the engine off, turn the steering wheel slowly from near left lock to near right lock 15-20 times.
- Do not force the steering wheel against either stop.
- Check the reservoir after every few cycles and add fluid before the level falls below MIN.
- Continue until large bubbles stop appearing and the fluid level remains stable.
Step 11: Reconnect the Battery and Complete Running Bleed
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reconnect the negative battery terminal securely.
- Confirm that the reservoir contains fluid, then start the engine for no more than two seconds and switch it off.
- Check the level immediately and add Dexron-compatible ATF as needed.
- Restart the engine and let it idle. Do not rev the engine during bleeding.
- Turn the steering wheel slowly from side to side several times without holding it at either stop.
- Switch the engine off if the fluid becomes foamy. Wait at least 10 minutes for the air to separate, then repeat the engine-off bleeding process.
- Once the fluid is clear and assist is smooth, use the floor jack to remove the jack stands and lower your 4Runner.

- ✅ With the engine idling, inspect the pressure-line union, suction hose, pump body, and reservoir for leaks.
- ✅ Verify that the pulley runs straight and the belt remains centered.
- ✅ Turn the steering slowly in both directions. Assist should be smooth, quiet, and consistent.
