📋 Before You Begin
- Park your RAV4 on level ground and press the parking brake switch to apply the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels if lifting the front of the vehicle.
- Turn the ignition off and keep the smart key at least 15 feet away from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and disconnect the 12V battery negative cable with a 10mm wrench.
- Use an OBD-II scan tool before disconnecting the battery if you need to record stored codes.
- An oxygen sensor socket is a slotted 22mm socket that fits over the sensor wire while loosening the sensor.
- Bank 1 Sensor 1 is the upstream sensor before the catalytic converter; Bank 1 Sensor 2 is the downstream sensor after the catalytic converter.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Cool and Secure the Vehicle
- Use wheel chocks to block the wheels so your RAV4 cannot roll.
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves before working near the exhaust.
- Confirm the exhaust is cool enough to touch before continuing.
- Cold exhaust prevents burns.
Step 2: Disconnect the 12V Battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it so it cannot spring back.
- Wait at least 90 seconds before unplugging sensor connectors.
Step 3: Raise the Front if Replacing the Downstream Sensor
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point if extra access is needed.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
- Skip this lifting step if you can safely reach the sensor from above.
Step 4: Remove Lower Shielding if Needed
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic push clips from the front lower engine undercover if it blocks access.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to help release stubborn clips gently.
- Set the clips and shield aside in order so they go back in the same locations.
Step 5: Locate the Correct Sensor
- Use a flashlight to follow the exhaust path from the engine down to the catalytic converter.
- Identify Bank 1 Sensor 1 as the sensor threaded into the exhaust before the catalytic converter.
- Identify Bank 1 Sensor 2 as the sensor threaded into the exhaust after the catalytic converter.
- Replace only the sensor matching your scan tool code.
Step 6: Unplug the Sensor Connector
- Use your fingers to press the connector lock tab and separate the sensor connector.
- If the connector is tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently at the lock tab only.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to release the wiring harness clips from brackets.
- Note the wire routing before removal so the new sensor wire stays away from hot exhaust parts.
Step 7: Loosen the Old Sensor
- Spray penetrating oil at the base of the sensor where it threads into the exhaust.
- Wait 5-10 minutes for the penetrating oil to soak in.
- Slide the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
- If access is tight, use a 3/8-inch drive extension with the oxygen sensor socket.
- Steady pressure beats sudden force.
Step 8: Remove the Old Sensor
- Once loose, use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to unthread the sensor fully.
- Remove the sensor and guide the wire out carefully so it does not snag.
- Use a shop rag to wipe dirt around the exhaust sensor bung, which is the threaded hole in the exhaust pipe.
Step 9: Prepare the New Sensor
- Check whether the new sensor threads already have anti-seize compound on them.
- If the threads are dry, apply a very small amount of exhaust sensor anti-seize compound to the threads only.
- Do not get anti-seize compound on the sensor tip.
- Compare the connector shape and wire length with the old sensor before installing.
Step 10: Install the New Sensor
- Start threading the new sensor by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the sensor.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench with the 22mm oxygen sensor socket to tighten the sensor to Torque to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
- If your replacement sensor instructions give a different torque, follow the sensor manufacturer’s included specification.
Step 11: Route and Connect the Wiring
- Route the new sensor wire exactly like the original wire.
- Use your hands to snap the wiring clips back into their brackets.
- Plug the sensor connector in until the lock clicks.
- Make sure the wire is not touching the exhaust, driveshaft, steering shaft, or sharp edges.
Step 12: Reinstall Shielding
- Lift the lower engine undercover into position by hand.
- Use a trim clip removal tool or your fingers to reinstall the plastic push clips.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to reset clip centers.
Step 13: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands by hand.
- Lower your RAV4 slowly with the floor jack.
Step 14: Reconnect the 12V Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal nut until snug.
- Do not overtighten the small battery terminal nut.
Step 15: Clear Codes and Test
- Use an OBD-II scan tool to clear stored oxygen sensor fault codes.
- Start your RAV4 and let the gas engine run when it cycles on.
- Check under the vehicle for exhaust leaks or loose wiring.
