On the turbocharged 2.5L engine, oxygen sensors thread into the exhaust system and can be tight from heat cycles, so patience and the correct sensor socket are important.

Assumption: This guide covers replacing either the upstream air/fuel ratio sensor before the catalytic converter or the downstream oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter.

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support your CX-5 with jack stands if lifting it. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the sensor to reduce the chance of electrical damage.
  • ⚠️ Do not twist or stretch the sensor wiring harness. The wires are delicate.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your CX-5 on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels if lifting the front of the vehicle.
  • Let the engine and exhaust cool for at least 1 hour.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable. Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back to the battery post.
  • Use an OBD2 scan tool to read the trouble code before replacing the sensor. “Bank 1 Sensor 1” is the upstream sensor before the catalytic converter. “Bank 1 Sensor 2” is the downstream sensor after the catalytic converter.
  • An oxygen sensor socket is a deep 22mm socket with a slot cut in the side so the sensor wire can pass through it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the Correct Sensor

  • Use the OBD2 scan tool to identify which sensor code is stored.
  • For Bank 1 Sensor 1, locate the sensor threaded into the exhaust near the turbo/downpipe area before the catalytic converter.
  • For Bank 1 Sensor 2, locate the sensor threaded into the exhaust after the catalytic converter, usually accessed from underneath.
  • Use a flashlight if needed and trace the sensor wire to its electrical connector.
  • Match the code before removing parts.

Step 2: Raise and Secure the Vehicle if Needed

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point if underside access is needed.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
  • Gently lower your CX-5 onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching the jacking point as backup, but do not use it as the main support.

Step 3: Remove the Underbody Shield if It Blocks Access

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the underbody shield bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic clips without breaking them.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver only if a clip needs gentle help lifting.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
  • Reinstallation torque for small underbody shield bolts is typically Torque to 7-9 Nm (62-80 in-lbs).

Step 4: Unplug the Oxygen Sensor Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the connector lock tab and unplug the sensor harness.
  • If the connector is stuck, use a flathead screwdriver to gently lift the lock tab while pulling the connector apart.
  • Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.
  • Note the original wire routing and clip locations before removal.

Step 5: Loosen the Old Sensor

  • Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads where it enters the exhaust pipe.
  • Wait 5-10 minutes so the oil can work into the threads.
  • Slide the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the wire and onto the sensor hex.
  • Use the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
  • If there is not enough room for the socket, use a 22mm wrench instead.
  • Slow pressure works better than jerking.

Step 6: Remove the Old Sensor

  • Once loose, turn the sensor counterclockwise by hand until it comes out.
  • Use mechanic gloves because the exhaust threads may be sharp or dirty.
  • Compare the old sensor to the new sensor. The connector shape, wire length, and threaded tip should match.

Step 7: Prepare the New Sensor

  • Check whether the new sensor already has anti-seize on the threads. It usually appears as a silver or gray coating.
  • If it does not, apply a tiny amount of oxygen-sensor-safe anti-seize compound only to the threads.
  • Do not get anti-seize on the sensor tip. The tip is the measuring end that sits inside the exhaust stream.

Step 8: Install the New Sensor

  • Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Cross-threading means the threads start crooked and can damage the exhaust bung.
  • Once hand-tight, use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench to tighten it.
  • For Mazda oxygen sensors, tighten to Torque to 40-50 Nm (30-37 ft-lbs) unless the sensor manufacturer specifies otherwise.
  • If using a 22mm wrench where a torque wrench will not fit, tighten snugly without over-forcing it.

Step 9: Reconnect and Route the Wiring

  • Route the sensor wire exactly like the original wiring path.
  • Clip the harness back into its brackets using your fingers.
  • Plug the connector in until it clicks.
  • Keep the wire away from the exhaust pipe, turbocharger, driveshaft, and moving suspension parts.

Step 10: Reinstall the Underbody Shield

  • Position the shield back in place by hand.
  • Install plastic clips using your fingers or trim clip removal tool.
  • Use a 10mm socket to install the shield bolts.
  • Tighten the small shield bolts to Torque to 7-9 Nm (62-80 in-lbs).

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your CX-5 slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground with the floor jack.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the terminal nut snugly to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal, because it can crack or deform.

Step 13: Clear Codes and Verify Repair

  • Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear the stored oxygen sensor code.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check that there are no exhaust leaks around the new sensor.
  • Watch for a check engine light returning during a short test drive.

  • ✅ Drive your CX-5 for 10-20 minutes with a mix of city and steady-speed driving.
  • ✅ Recheck for pending codes with the OBD2 scan tool after the test drive.
