🔧 1500 - Oxygen Sensor Replacement

This repair replaces a faulty oxygen sensor in the exhaust system. Your 1500 uses multiple oxygen sensors: upstream sensors before the catalytic converters help control fuel mixture, and downstream sensors after the catalytic converters monitor catalyst efficiency.

Assumption: This guide covers replacing one oxygen sensor after confirming its location by diagnostic trouble code, such as Bank 1 Sensor 1, Bank 2 Sensor 1, Bank 1 Sensor 2, or Bank 2 Sensor 2.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the exhaust cool completely before working. Exhaust pipes and catalytic converters can cause severe burns.
  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and support your 1500 with jack stands. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the oxygen sensor connector.
  • ⚠️ Do not twist the vehicle-side wiring harness. Only rotate the sensor body with the socket or wrench.
  • ⚠️ Oxygen sensors are fragile. Do not drop the new sensor or touch the sensor tip.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your 1500 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels if lifting the front, or in front of the front wheels if lifting the rear.
  • Use an OBD-II scan tool to read the code and identify the exact oxygen sensor location.
  • Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. On the 5.7L HEMI, Bank 1 is the driver side.
  • Bank 2 is the passenger side.
  • Sensor 1 means upstream, before the catalytic converter.
  • Sensor 2 means downstream, after the catalytic converter.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Support the Truck

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your 1500 at a proper frame lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame.
  • Gently lower the truck onto the stands and give it a light shake to confirm it is stable.
  • Never crawl under a jack-only vehicle.

Step 2: Locate the Correct Oxygen Sensor

  • Use the code from your OBD-II scan tool to locate the correct sensor.
  • For Bank 1 Sensor 1, look on the driver-side exhaust pipe before the catalytic converter.
  • For Bank 2 Sensor 1, look on the passenger-side exhaust pipe before the catalytic converter.
  • For Bank 1 Sensor 2, look on the driver-side exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter.
  • For Bank 2 Sensor 2, look on the passenger-side exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter.
  • An oxygen sensor looks like a small metal plug threaded into the exhaust pipe with an electrical wire attached.

Step 3: Spray the Sensor Threads

  • Spray penetrating oil where the oxygen sensor threads into the exhaust pipe.
  • Let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
  • For stubborn sensors, spray again and wait a few more minutes.
  • Patience prevents stripped exhaust threads.

Step 4: Unplug the Sensor Connector

  • Follow the oxygen sensor wire to its electrical connector.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to release any harness clips from the frame or bracket.
  • Press the connector lock tab by hand and separate the connector.
  • If the connector is stuck, gently lift the lock tab with the trim clip removal tool.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 5: Remove the Old Oxygen Sensor

  • Slide the 7/8 inch oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
  • An oxygen sensor socket has a slot in the side so the wire can pass through it.
  • Use a 3/8 inch drive ratchet and 3/8 inch drive extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
  • If space is too tight for the socket, use a 22mm open-end wrench.
  • Remove the sensor by hand once it is loose.
  • Keep the sensor wire from wrapping around nearby parts while turning.

Step 6: Prepare the New Oxygen Sensor

  • Compare the new oxygen sensor with the old one. The connector shape, wire length, and thread size should match.
  • If the new sensor threads are not already coated, apply a tiny amount of oxygen-sensor-safe anti-seize compound to the threads only.
  • Do not get anti-seize on the sensor tip.
  • Many new sensors come pre-coated. If so, do not add more.

Step 7: Install the New Oxygen Sensor

  • Thread the new sensor into the exhaust pipe by hand first.
  • Turn it clockwise at least 3-4 full turns by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 7/8 inch oxygen sensor socket, 3/8 inch drive extension, and torque wrench 3/8 inch drive to tighten it.
  • Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
  • If you cannot fit the torque wrench, snug it firmly with the 22mm open-end wrench without over-tightening.

Step 8: Reconnect and Secure the Wiring

  • Route the new sensor wire exactly like the original wire.
  • Keep the wire away from the exhaust pipe, driveshaft, steering shaft, and sharp edges.
  • Push the electrical connector together by hand until it clicks.
  • Use the trim clip removal tool to help seat any harness clips back into their brackets.
  • Replace any broken harness clips with replacement exhaust sensor harness clips.

Step 9: Reconnect the Battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Do not over-tighten the battery terminal.

Step 10: Lower the Truck

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your 1500 slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the truck slowly to the ground with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 11: Clear the Code

  • Connect the OBD-II scan tool to the diagnostic port under the driver-side dash.
  • Turn the ignition to Run without starting the engine.
  • Use the OBD-II scan tool to clear the oxygen sensor diagnostic trouble code.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.

  • ✅ Listen for exhaust leaks near the replaced sensor. A ticking sound can mean the sensor is loose.
  • ✅ Check that the sensor wire is not touching the exhaust after the engine runs.
  • ✅ Test drive your 1500 for 10-15 minutes with light throttle and steady cruising.
  • ✅ Recheck for codes with the OBD-II scan tool.
  • ✅ Some emissions monitors may need several drive cycles before showing “ready.”
