📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Kicks on level ground, shift to Park, and apply the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Let the engine and exhaust cool for at least 1 hour.
- Use an OBD2 scan tool to identify the failed sensor:
- Bank 1 Sensor 1 means the upstream air/fuel ratio sensor before the catalytic converter.
- Bank 1 Sensor 2 means the downstream oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. Set the cable aside so it cannot spring back to the battery post.
- If you need more room under the vehicle, lift the front of your Kicks with a floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum, then support it with jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the Correct Oxygen Sensor
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use the OBD2 scan tool code to choose the correct sensor location.
- For Bank 1 Sensor 1, look at the exhaust manifold/catalyst area near the engine. This is the upstream sensor.
- For Bank 1 Sensor 2, look farther down the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter. This is the downstream sensor.
- An oxygen sensor socket is a 22mm socket with a slot in the side so the sensor wire can pass through it.
- Tip: Replace only the sensor named by the code.
Step 2: Access the Sensor Connector
- Use a flat trim clip remover to gently release any plastic retainers or splash shield clips blocking access.
- Use needle-nose pliers to release wire retaining clips if needed.
- Follow the sensor wire from the exhaust sensor body to its electrical connector.
- Press the connector lock tab by hand and unplug the sensor connector.
- Do not pull on the wire. Pull on the connector body only.
Step 3: Free the Sensor Wire Harness
- Use needle-nose pliers to open the metal or plastic wire retainers.
- Note the exact wire routing before removal.
- Move the harness away from the exhaust so it does not twist while loosening the sensor.
- Tip: Take a phone photo before removal.
Step 4: Loosen the Old Sensor
- Spray a small amount of penetrating oil on the sensor threads where the sensor enters the exhaust.
- Wait 5-10 minutes for the oil to soak in.
- Slide the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the sensor with the wire passing through the slot.
- Use a 3/8-inch ratchet and 3/8-inch extension, 6-inch to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
- If access is tight, use a 22mm open-end wrench instead.
- Break the sensor loose slowly. Avoid jerking the tool because the exhaust bung threads can be damaged.
Step 5: Remove the Old Sensor
- Once loose, spin the sensor out by hand if possible.
- If it is still tight, continue using the 22mm oxygen sensor socket until it can be removed.
- Compare the old sensor to the new one. The connector shape, wire length, and thread size should match.
Step 6: Prepare the New Sensor
- Check the new sensor threads.
- If the threads already have gray or silver coating, that is pre-applied anti-seize compound.
- If no coating is present and the sensor instructions allow it, apply a very small amount of exhaust sensor anti-seize compound to the threads only.
- Keep anti-seize away from the sensor tip. The sensor tip is the small end that sits inside the exhaust stream.
Step 7: Install the New Sensor
- Start threading the new sensor into the exhaust by hand.
- Turn it clockwise several full turns by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench, 3/8-inch drive to tighten it.
- Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- If your replacement sensor packaging gives a different torque spec, use the sensor manufacturer’s value.
Step 8: Route and Connect the Wiring
- Route the new sensor wire exactly like the original wire.
- Use needle-nose pliers to secure the wire into its retaining clips.
- Keep the wire away from the exhaust pipe, steering components, and moving engine parts.
- Push the electrical connector together until it clicks.
- Use a flat trim clip remover to reinstall any splash shield clips removed earlier.
Step 9: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back on the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal.
Step 10: Lower the Vehicle
- If raised, use the floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum to lift your Kicks slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly with the floor jack.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 11: Clear the Code and Check Operation
- Connect the OBD2 scan tool to the diagnostic port under the driver side dash.
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the scan tool to clear stored oxygen sensor trouble codes.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Listen for exhaust leaks near the sensor. A leak may sound like ticking or puffing.
