📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Odyssey on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before raising the front.
- Use an OBD-II scan tool to identify the failed sensor before removing anything.
- Bank 1 is the rear/firewall side of the V6 engine. Bank 2 is the front/radiator side.
- Sensor 1 is before the catalytic converter. Sensor 2 is after the catalytic converter.
- An oxygen sensor socket is a deep 22mm socket with a slot for the sensor wire.
- Let the exhaust cool fully before starting.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify the Correct Sensor
- Use the OBD-II scan tool to read the stored trouble code.
- If the code says Bank 1 Sensor 1, replace the upstream sensor on the rear/firewall side.
- If the code says Bank 2 Sensor 1, replace the upstream sensor on the front/radiator side.
- If the code says Bank 1 Sensor 2 or Bank 2 Sensor 2, replace the downstream sensor after the catalytic converter on that bank.
- Match the code before buying parts.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
Step 3: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
- Lower your Odyssey gently onto the jack stands.
- Push the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before getting underneath.
Step 4: Remove Any Lower Shield Blocking Access
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic push clips from the lower splash shield if it blocks the sensor.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any small shield bolts.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
Step 5: Locate the Sensor Connector
- Follow the sensor wire from the exhaust pipe up to its electrical connector.
- Use a flathead screwdriver gently if the connector lock is stiff.
- Press the connector tab and separate the connector by pulling on the plastic connector body.
- Do not twist or pull the wires.
Step 6: Spray the Sensor Threads
- Spray penetrating oil where the sensor threads into the exhaust.
- Let it soak for 5-10 minutes.
- If the sensor is very rusty, apply more penetrating oil and wait longer.
- Patience prevents broken exhaust threads.
Step 7: Remove the Old Sensor
- Slide the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the hex of the sensor.
- Attach the 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to the oxygen sensor socket.
- Turn the sensor counterclockwise to loosen it.
- If space is tight, use the 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension with the oxygen sensor socket.
- Once loose, use the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to spin the sensor out.
Step 8: Prepare the New Sensor
- Compare the new sensor to the old one. The connector shape, wire length, and thread size should match.
- If the new sensor threads do not already have gray anti-seize on them, apply a small amount of oxygen sensor-safe anti-seize compound.
- Keep anti-seize off the sensor tip. The tip is the part that reads exhaust gases.
Step 9: Install the New Sensor
- Start the new sensor by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the sensor.
- Use the torque wrench 10-80 Nm range and 22mm oxygen sensor socket to tighten the sensor.
- Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
Step 10: Reconnect the Wiring
- Route the sensor wire the same way the original wire was routed.
- Keep the wire away from the exhaust pipe, steering parts, and moving engine parts.
- Plug the connector in until it clicks.
- Use the original wire clips or holders to secure the harness.
Step 11: Reinstall the Lower Shield
- Lift the splash shield back into position by hand.
- Use the trim clip removal tool to reinstall plastic push clips.
- Use the 10mm socket to reinstall shield bolts.
- Tighten shield bolts snug only. Do not overtighten plastic shield hardware.
Step 12: Lower the Vehicle and Reconnect the Battery
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Odyssey slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Use the 10mm socket to tighten the negative battery terminal clamp snugly.
Step 13: Clear the Code
- Connect the OBD-II scan tool to the diagnostic port under the driver side dashboard.
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the scan tool to clear the stored oxygen sensor code.
- Start the engine and confirm the warning light stays off.

- Start your Odyssey and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
