Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- Black cable is negative.
Step 2: Raise the Vehicle if Needed
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels if lifting the front of your Tucson.
- Use a floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point or approved side jacking point.
- Lower the vehicle onto jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum.
- Gently shake the vehicle by hand to make sure it is stable before getting underneath.
Step 3: Locate the Oxygen Sensor
- Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
- Find the oxygen sensor threaded into the exhaust pipe.
- Use a flashlight if available to follow the sensor wire to its electrical connector.
- If replacing the upstream sensor, look near the exhaust manifold/catalytic converter area at the front of the engine.
- If replacing the downstream sensor, look after the catalytic converter farther down the exhaust pipe.
Step 4: Unplug the Sensor Connector
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the connector lock tab if it is tight.
- Use needle-nose pliers only on the connector clip if needed. Do not pull on the wires.
- Separate the oxygen sensor connector from the vehicle harness.
- Pull the plug, not wires.
Step 5: Spray the Sensor Threads
- Spray penetrating oil spray around the base of the oxygen sensor where it threads into the exhaust.
- Wait 5-10 minutes to let it soak into the threads.
- This helps loosen rust and reduces the chance of damaging the exhaust threads.
Step 6: Remove the Old Oxygen Sensor
- Slide the sensor wire through the slot in the 22mm oxygen sensor socket.
- Attach the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive extension, 6-inch if needed.
- Turn counterclockwise to break the sensor loose.
- Once loose, unthread the sensor by hand if possible.
- If it is very tight, apply more penetrating oil spray and work it back and forth gently.
Step 7: Prepare the New Sensor
- Compare the new oxygen sensor to the old one. The connector shape and wire length should match.
- If the new sensor does not already have coating on the threads, apply a tiny amount of oxygen-sensor safe anti-seize compound to the threads only.
- Keep anti-seize away from the sensor tip. The tip is the sensing end and must stay clean.
- Never touch the sensor tip.
Step 8: Install the New Oxygen Sensor
- Start threading the new sensor by hand to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the threads are not lined up and can damage the exhaust bung.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench, 3/8-inch drive to tighten it.
- Torque to 40-50 Nm (30-37 ft-lbs).
- Route the wire the same way as the original sensor, away from the hot exhaust and moving parts.
Step 9: Reconnect the Sensor Connector
- Push the oxygen sensor connector into the vehicle harness until it clicks.
- Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall any wire retaining clips if removed.
- Make sure the wire has slack and is not stretched tight.
Step 10: Lower the Vehicle and Reconnect Battery
- Use the floor jack, rated 2-ton minimum to raise your Tucson slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands, rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
Step 11: Clear Codes and Test
- Use an OBD2 scan tool to clear the stored oxygen sensor fault code.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
