📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Accord on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Let the engine and exhaust cool fully before starting.
- Use an OBD2 scan tool to confirm which sensor failed. “Sensor 1” is the upstream sensor before the catalytic converter. “Sensor 2” is the downstream sensor after the catalytic converter.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- If replacing the downstream sensor, raise the front of the car with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the Sensor Location
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to read the stored trouble code before removing anything.
- For codes pointing to Bank 1 Sensor 1, replace the upstream air-fuel ratio sensor near the engine side of the exhaust.
- For codes pointing to Bank 1 Sensor 2, replace the downstream oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter under the vehicle.
- Bank 1 means the only cylinder bank on your Accord’s inline-4 engine.
- Replace the coded sensor only.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- This helps protect the engine computer and sensor circuit while unplugging the connector.
Step 3: Raise the Vehicle if Needed
- If replacing the downstream sensor, use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
- Gently lower the car onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack nearby as backup support, but do not use it as the only support.
Step 4: Remove Access Panels if Needed
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic splash shield clips blocking access to the sensor or connector.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any splash shield bolts if fitted.
- Set the clips and bolts aside in order so they go back in the same locations.
Step 5: Unplug the Oxygen Sensor Connector
- Follow the sensor wire from the exhaust sensor body to the electrical connector.
- Press the connector lock tab by hand and unplug the connector.
- If the connector is stubborn, use the trim clip removal tool gently to help release the lock tab.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.
- Connector plastic can break easily.
Step 6: Loosen the Old Sensor
- Spray penetrating oil around the base of the sensor where it threads into the exhaust.
- Wait 5-10 minutes for the penetrating oil to soak in.
- Use a 22mm oxygen sensor socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 6-inch extension to loosen the sensor.
- An oxygen sensor socket has a slot for the wire so the socket can slide over the sensor without cutting the harness.
- If space is tight, use a 22mm wrench to break the sensor loose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Sensor
- Once loose, unscrew the sensor by hand while keeping the wiring from twisting around nearby parts.
- Compare the old sensor to the new sensor before installation.
- Make sure the connector shape, wire length, and thread size match.
Step 8: Prepare the New Sensor
- Check the new sensor threads for factory-applied anti-seize compound.
- If the threads are dry, apply a very small amount of exhaust-safe anti-seize compound to the threads only.
- Do not get anti-seize on the sensor tip. The tip is the sensing end and contamination can ruin it.
- Most quality sensors are pre-coated.
Step 9: Install the New Sensor
- Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first.
- Hand-threading prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting the sensor crooked.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench to tighten the sensor.
- Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs)
- Route the wiring the same way as the original so it stays away from the exhaust pipe and moving parts.
Step 10: Reconnect the Sensor Connector
- Push the sensor connector together by hand until the lock tab clicks.
- Use the trim clip removal tool to reinstall any wire retainers or harness clips.
- Make sure the wire has a little slack and is not stretched tight.
Step 11: Reinstall Shields and Lower the Vehicle
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any splash shield bolts removed earlier.
- Torque splash shield bolts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)
- Use the trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the plastic clips.
- If the vehicle was raised, use the floor jack to lift slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle slowly.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back on the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
Step 13: Clear Codes and Check Operation
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear the diagnostic trouble codes.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Check around the sensor area for exhaust leaks, ticking sounds, or loose wiring.
- Take a short test drive and recheck for warning lights.

- Drive your Accord through several normal trips so the engine computer can complete emissions readiness checks.
- If the check engine light returns, use the OBD2 scan tool to read the new code before replacing more parts.
