📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Expedition on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels if lifting the front, or in front of the front wheels if lifting the rear.
  • Use an OBD-II scan tool to read the fault code and identify the exact sensor location before removing parts.
  • Bank 1 is the passenger-side cylinder bank on your Expedition.
  • Bank 2 is the driver-side cylinder bank on your Expedition.
  • Sensor 1 means upstream sensor, located before the catalytic converter.
  • Sensor 2 means downstream sensor, located after the catalytic converter.
  • An oxygen sensor socket is a deep socket with a slot that fits around the sensor wire.
  • Let the exhaust cool for at least 1 hour if the engine was recently running.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the Failed Sensor

  • Plug the OBD-II scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver-side dash.
  • Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Read the stored codes and note whether the code points to Bank 1 Sensor 1, Bank 2 Sensor 1, Bank 1 Sensor 2, or Bank 2 Sensor 2.
  • Use this guide to locate it:
    • Bank 1 Sensor 1: passenger side, before catalytic converter.
    • Bank 2 Sensor 1: driver side, before catalytic converter.
    • Bank 1 Sensor 2: passenger side, after catalytic converter.
    • Bank 2 Sensor 2: driver side, after catalytic converter.
  • Match the code before buying parts.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Open the hood and locate the battery.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.

Step 3: Raise and Support the Vehicle

  • Place wheel chocks at the wheels that will stay on the ground.
  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the correct frame jacking point.
  • Raise your Expedition high enough to safely reach the sensor.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 4: Locate the Oxygen Sensor Connector

  • Use a shop light to follow the oxygen sensor wire from the exhaust pipe to its electrical connector.
  • If a splash shield or small heat shield blocks access, use a trim clip removal tool or 10mm socket to remove the fasteners.
  • Do not remove more panels than needed.
  • Take a photo before unplugging.

Step 5: Unplug the Old Sensor

  • Press the connector lock tab with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Pull the connector halves apart by the plastic connector body.
  • If the wire harness is clipped to a bracket, use needle-nose pliers or a trim clip removal tool to release the clip.
  • Do not twist or yank the wiring.

Step 6: Loosen the Old Oxygen Sensor

  • Spray a small amount of penetrating oil on the sensor threads where it enters the exhaust pipe.
  • Wait 5-10 minutes for the oil to soak in.
  • Slide the 7/8-inch oxygen sensor socket over the sensor and wire.
  • Attach the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension if needed.
  • Turn counterclockwise to loosen the sensor.
  • If it is stuck, tighten it slightly, then loosen again. This helps break rust loose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Sensor

  • Once loose, unscrew the sensor by hand while guiding the wire so it does not wrap around other parts.
  • Compare the old sensor to the new direct-fit oxygen sensor.
  • Confirm the connector shape, wire length, and mounting style match.

Step 8: Prepare the New Sensor

  • If the new sensor threads already have anti-seize coating, do not add more.
  • If the threads are bare, apply a very small amount of anti-seize compound rated for oxygen sensors only to the threads.
  • Keep anti-seize off the sensor tip.
  • The sensor tip is the small exposed end that sits inside the exhaust stream.

Step 9: Install the New Sensor

  • Thread the new sensor into the exhaust bung by hand first. The bung is the threaded boss welded into the exhaust pipe.
  • Turn it clockwise by hand until snug.
  • Use the 7/8-inch oxygen sensor socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten it.
  • Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. Exhaust threads can be damaged.

Step 10: Reconnect the Wiring

  • Route the new sensor wire the same way the old wire was routed.
  • Keep the wire away from the exhaust pipe, driveshaft, steering shaft, and sharp edges.
  • Push the electrical connector together until it clicks.
  • Use needle-nose pliers or a trim clip removal tool to reinstall any harness clips.
  • If removed, reinstall shields or panels using the 10mm socket or trim clip removal tool.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Expedition slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back on the battery post.
  • Use the 10mm socket to tighten the terminal clamp.
  • Make it snug, but do not overtighten the battery terminal.

Step 13: Clear the Code

  • Connect the OBD-II scan tool again.
  • Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the scan tool menu to clear stored fault codes.
  • Start the engine and confirm the check engine light stays off.

  • Start your Expedition and let it idle for a few minutes.
  • Listen for exhaust leaks near the replaced sensor. A leak may sound like a ticking or puffing noise.
  • Take a 10-15 minute test drive with light acceleration and steady cruising.

  • If the same oxygen sensor code returns quickly, check the connector, wiring route, and exhaust leaks before replacing more parts.
