Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Truck
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the front of your F-150 at a proper front frame/jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands and lightly shake the truck to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the wheel chocks in place while working.
Step 2: Find the Correct Oxygen Sensor
- Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
- Use the OBD2 code to identify the sensor location:
- Bank 1 Sensor 1 means passenger side, before the catalytic converter.
- Bank 1 Sensor 2 means passenger side, after the catalytic converter.
- Bank 2 Sensor 1 means driver side, before the catalytic converter.
- Bank 2 Sensor 2 means driver side, after the catalytic converter.
- Look for a small sensor screwed into the exhaust pipe with an electrical wire coming out of it.
- Trace the wire before unplugging anything.
Step 3: Disconnect the Sensor Electrical Connector
- Follow the sensor wire up to its connector clipped to the frame, transmission area, or nearby bracket.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or trim clip removal tool to release any wiring retainers.
- Press the connector lock tab with your thumb or flat-blade screwdriver, then pull the connector apart by the plastic housings.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 4: Loosen the Old Oxygen Sensor
- Spray a small amount of penetrating oil where the sensor threads into the exhaust bung.
- Let it soak for 5-10 minutes.
- Slide the 7/8 inch oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
- Use the 3/8 inch drive ratchet and 3/8 inch drive 6 inch extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
- If it is stuck, use the 3/8 inch drive breaker bar for controlled extra leverage.
- Slow pressure works better than jerking.
Step 5: Remove the Old Sensor
- Once loose, spin the sensor out by hand while guiding the wire so it does not twist around nearby parts.
- Use needle-nose pliers to remove any wiring clips that hold the old sensor harness in place.
- Compare the old sensor and new sensor to make sure the connector shape, wire length, and thread size match.
Step 6: Prepare the New Sensor
- Check the new sensor threads.
- If the threads already have silver or gray paste on them, no additional anti-seize is needed.
- If the threads are dry, apply a very thin coat of anti-seize compound only to the threads.
- Keep anti-seize off the sensor tip, vents, and connector.
Step 7: Install the New Oxygen Sensor
- Thread the new sensor into the exhaust bung by hand first.
- Turn it clockwise several turns to avoid cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting it crooked.
- Use the 7/8 inch oxygen sensor socket, 3/8 inch drive 6 inch extension, and torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm to tighten it.
- Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Route and Connect the Wiring
- Route the new sensor wire exactly like the old one.
- Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall any harness clips or retainers.
- Keep the wire away from the exhaust, driveshaft, front axle components, and steering shaft.
- Push the electrical connector together until it clicks.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to seat a locking tab gently.
Step 9: Lower the Truck
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your F-150 slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 10: Clear Codes and Check Operation
- Connect the OBD2 scan tool to the diagnostic port under the driver side of the dash.
- Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear the stored oxygen sensor code.
- Start the engine and listen for exhaust leaks near the sensor.
- If you hear a ticking leak, shut the engine off and recheck sensor tightness after the exhaust cools.
