Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Highlander at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Keep wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Shake gently to confirm stability.
Step 2: Remove Lower Splash Shield if Needed
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic clips from the lower engine splash shield if it blocks access.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove any 10mm bolts holding the shield.
- Set the shield and clips aside in order.
Step 3: Locate the Correct Sensor
- For the upstream air-fuel ratio sensor, look at the exhaust manifold area before the catalytic converter.
- For the downstream oxygen sensor, look in the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter under the vehicle.
- The catalytic converter is the larger metal exhaust section that reduces emissions.
- Trace the sensor wire to its electrical connector before loosening the sensor.
Step 4: Soak the Sensor Threads
- Spray penetrating oil where the sensor threads enter the exhaust pipe.
- Wait 10-15 minutes.
- If the sensor is badly rusted, apply penetrating oil again and wait longer.
- Patience prevents broken exhaust threads.
Step 5: Disconnect the Sensor Connector
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Press the locking tab on the sensor connector by hand.
- Pull the connector apart without pulling on the wires.
- If a harness clip is attached, release it carefully with a trim clip removal tool.
Step 6: Remove the Old Sensor
- Slide a 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.

- If space is tight, use a 22mm crowfoot oxygen sensor wrench with the 3/8-inch ratchet.
- Remove the sensor by hand once it breaks loose.
- Do not let the wire twist around brake lines, steering parts, or exhaust brackets.
Step 7: Prepare the New Sensor
- Compare the old and new sensor connector shape, wire length, and mounting threads.
- If the new sensor does not have anti-seize already on the threads, apply a tiny amount of exhaust sensor anti-seize compound to the threads only.
- Keep anti-seize away from the sensor tip. The sensor tip is the part that reads exhaust gases.
- Do not touch the sensor tip.
Step 8: Install the New Sensor
- Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first.
- Make sure it turns smoothly. If it feels rough immediately, back it out and start again.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket or 22mm crowfoot oxygen sensor wrench with a torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm.
- Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the Wiring
- Route the wire the same way the original wire was routed.
- Keep the wire away from the hot exhaust pipe and moving parts.
- Push the electrical connector together until it clicks.
- Reinstall any harness clips by hand or with a trim clip removal tool.
Step 10: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Position the splash shield back under the engine.
- Install plastic clips by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the bolts snugly.
- Torque 10mm splash shield bolts to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 11: Lower the Vehicle and Reconnect Battery
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Highlander slowly to the ground.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Torque the battery terminal nut to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
Step 12: Clear Codes and Check Operation
- Plug in the OBD2 scan tool under the driver side dash.
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
