🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use wheel chocks to secure the rear wheels.
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Canyon at the proper front lift point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame support points.
- Gently lower the truck onto the jack stands and shake it lightly to confirm it is stable.
- Never crawl under a jack-only vehicle.
Step 2: Locate the Correct Oxygen Sensor
- Use safety glasses and a flashlight if available to look along the exhaust pipe.
- For the upstream sensor, look near the exhaust manifold area before the catalytic converter.
- For the downstream sensor, look after the catalytic converter in the exhaust pipe.
- Use the OBD-II scan tool code result to match the failed sensor: Bank 1 Sensor 1 or Bank 1 Sensor 2.
- Replace the sensor named by the code.
Step 3: Spray the Sensor Threads
- Use penetrating oil on the base of the oxygen sensor where it threads into the exhaust.
- Let the penetrating oil soak for 10-15 minutes.
- Do not spray the electrical connector directly.
Step 4: Disconnect the Sensor Electrical Connector
- Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the oxygen sensor connector.
- If the tab is stiff, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to lift the lock while pulling the connector apart.
- Use the trim clip removal tool to release any wiring retainers from brackets.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the connector body.
Step 5: Remove the Old Oxygen Sensor
- Slide the 7/8-inch oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
- Use the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
- If the sensor is stuck, apply more penetrating oil and work it slowly back and forth.
- Remove the old sensor by hand once it loosens.
- Slow pressure prevents thread damage.
Step 6: Prepare the New Oxygen Sensor
- Compare the new sensor with the old sensor to make sure the connector and wire length match.
- If the new sensor threads are already coated, do not add anti-seize.
- If the threads are bare, apply a very small amount of oxygen-sensor-safe anti-seize compound to the threads only.
- Keep anti-seize off the sensor tip.
Step 7: Install the New Oxygen Sensor
- Thread the new oxygen sensor into the exhaust by hand first.
- Make sure it turns smoothly for several turns before using a ratchet.
- Use the 7/8-inch oxygen sensor socket, 3/8-inch drive extension, and torque wrench to tighten the sensor.
- Torque to 42 Nm (31 ft-lbs)
- If access prevents using a torque wrench, snug the sensor firmly without overtightening.
- Hand-starting prevents crossed threads.
Step 8: Reconnect the Sensor Wiring
- Route the new sensor wire the same way as the original wire.
- Use the trim clip removal tool by hand to seat wiring retainers back into their brackets if removed.
- Push the electrical connector together until it clicks.
- Make sure the wiring is away from the exhaust pipe, driveshaft, and sharp edges.
Step 9: Reconnect the Battery
- Use the 10mm wrench to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the terminal securely, but do not overtighten it.
Step 10: Lower the Truck
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Canyon slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the truck slowly to the ground with the floor jack.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 11: Clear Codes and Test
- Use the OBD-II scan tool to clear the stored oxygen sensor fault code.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Check that there are no exhaust leaks near the sensor.
- Take a short test drive and recheck for warning lights.

- ✅ The check engine light may stay off immediately after clearing codes, but the engine computer still needs a few drive cycles to confirm the repair.
- ✅ If the same code returns, inspect the sensor connector, wiring, exhaust leaks, and related fuel-control issues before replacing more parts.
- ✅ Do not touch the sensor wiring to the hot exhaust after the repair.
