- For oxygen sensor codes, Bank 1 means the only cylinder bank on this inline-4 engine.
- Sensor 1 is the upstream sensor before the catalytic converter, near the exhaust manifold.
- Sensor 2 is the downstream sensor after the catalytic converter, under the truck.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket before unplugging the sensor connector.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Read the Trouble Code
- Plug the OBD-II scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver side of the dash.
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the OBD-II scan tool to read codes and note whether the code points to Bank 1 Sensor 1 or Bank 1 Sensor 2.
- Do not replace both unless diagnosed.
Step 2: Cool and Secure the Truck
- Let the exhaust cool until it is safe to touch near the sensor area.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- If replacing the downstream sensor, lift the front of your Colorado with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points before going underneath.
- Wear safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
Step 3: Disconnect the Battery
- Open the hood.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
Step 4: Locate the Correct Oxygen Sensor
- For Bank 1 Sensor 1, look near the exhaust manifold area before the catalytic converter.
- For Bank 1 Sensor 2, look underneath the truck after the catalytic converter in the exhaust pipe.
- Use a trim clip remover tool if any small wiring retainers need to be released.
- Trace the sensor wire to its electrical connector before removing the sensor.
Step 5: Unplug the Sensor Connector
- Press the locking tab on the oxygen sensor connector by hand and unplug it.
- If the connector is clipped to a bracket, use the trim clip remover tool to gently release it.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the connector body.
- Take a photo before removing clips.
Step 6: Loosen the Old Sensor
- Spray the sensor threads with penetrating oil spray.
- Wait 5-10 minutes to let the oil soak into the threads.
- Slide the 7/8-inch oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
- Use the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive extension set to loosen the sensor counterclockwise.
- If access is tight, use a 22mm wrench instead.
- The oxygen sensor socket has a slot for the wire so you can remove the sensor without cutting the harness.
Step 7: Remove the Old Sensor
- Once loose, unscrew the sensor by hand.
- Compare the old sensor to the new oxygen sensor before installation.
- Make sure the connector shape and wire length match.
Step 8: Prepare the New Sensor
- Check the threads on the new oxygen sensor.
- If the threads already have anti-seize on them, do not add more.
- If the threads are bare, apply a very small amount of oxygen-sensor-safe anti-seize compound only to the threads.
- Keep anti-seize away from the sensor tip.
Step 9: Install the New Sensor
- Start the new oxygen sensor by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 7/8-inch oxygen sensor socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm to tighten it.
- Torque to 42 Nm (31 ft-lbs).
- If using a 22mm wrench because space is limited, tighten snugly without forcing it.
- Hand-starting prevents expensive thread damage.
Step 10: Reconnect the Wiring
- Route the sensor wire the same way as the original.
- Keep the wire away from the exhaust pipe, driveshaft, and sharp edges.
- Plug the connector in by hand until it clicks.
- Use the trim clip remover tool to help reinstall any wiring retainers if needed.
- Install replacement wiring retainer clips if the originals broke.
Step 11: Reconnect the Battery
- Reinstall the negative battery cable onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the terminal clamp.
- Do not overtighten the clamp.
Step 12: Lower the Truck
- If the truck was raised, lift it slightly with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Colorado slowly to the ground with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
