🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the Sensor
- Use safety glasses and a flashlight if needed to identify the correct sensor.
- The upstream air/fuel ratio sensor is mounted before the catalytic converter, closer to the engine.
- The downstream oxygen sensor is mounted after the catalytic converter, farther back in the exhaust.
- Match the sensor to the code.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- This helps prevent electrical shorts while unplugging the sensor.
Step 3: Raise and Support the Car if Needed
- Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels before lifting.
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Civic at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
- Gently lower the car onto the jack stands.
- Shake the car lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
Step 4: Spray the Sensor Threads
- Use penetrating oil spray on the base of the oxygen sensor where it threads into the exhaust.

- Penetrating oil helps loosen rust and heat-stuck threads.

Step 5: Unplug the Sensor Connector
- Use a flat trim tool to gently release any wire clips holding the sensor harness.
- Press the connector lock tab by hand and separate the connector.
- If the connector is tight, use the flat trim tool gently at the lock tab only.
- Do not twist or pull the wires.
Step 6: Remove the Old Sensor
- Slide the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
- An oxygen sensor socket has a slot in the side so the wire can pass through it.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
- If it feels stuck, stop and apply more penetrating oil spray.
- Remove the sensor by hand once it breaks loose.
Step 7: Prepare the New Sensor
- Compare the new sensor to the old sensor by connector shape, wire length, and thread size.
- If the new sensor does not come with anti-seize already on the threads, apply a very small amount of sensor-safe anti-seize compound to the threads only.
- Do not get anti-seize on the sensor tip.
- A little anti-seize is enough.
Step 8: Install the New Sensor
- Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first.
- This prevents cross-threading, which means the threads are going in crooked.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket, 3/8-inch drive extension, and torque wrench to tighten the sensor.
- Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs)
Step 9: Reconnect the Harness
- Route the sensor wire the same way the old one was routed.
- Use the original clips and brackets so the wire stays away from the hot exhaust.
- Push the connector together by hand until it clicks.
- Use the flat trim tool only if you need to seat a harness clip.
Step 10: Lower the Car
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Civic slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands by hand.
- Lower the car slowly with the floor jack.
Step 11: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back on the battery post.
- Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal clamp snugly.
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal.
Step 12: Clear the Code
- Plug the OBD2 scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver side dashboard.
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
