๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Front

  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point to raise your Tacoma enough to work safely.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame support points.
  • Gently lower the truck onto the jack stands and shake it lightly to confirm it is stable.
  • Never work under a jack-only vehicle.

Step 2: Locate the Correct Sensor

  • Use safety glasses and a flashlight if needed to inspect the exhaust.
  • For Bank 1 Sensor 1, look on the exhaust manifold/front exhaust pipe area before the catalytic converter.
  • For Bank 1 Sensor 2, look downstream after the catalytic converter.
  • Follow the sensor wire from the exhaust sensor body to its electrical connector.
  • Do not remove a different sensor unless the scan tool code points to that location.

Step 3: Spray the Sensor Threads

  • Use penetrating oil on the sensor threads where it screws into the exhaust pipe or manifold.
  • Let the penetrating oil soak for 10-15 minutes.
  • Keep oil away from the sensor connector and wire insulation.
  • A short soak prevents stripped threads.

Step 4: Unplug the Sensor Connector

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the connector lock tab if it is tight.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to release any wiring retainers from brackets.
  • Pull on the connector body, not the wires.
  • Note the original wire routing so the new wire does not touch the exhaust.

Step 5: Remove the Old Sensor

  • Slide the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the wire and onto the sensor hex.
  • Use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
  • If space is tight, use a 22mm open-end wrench instead.
  • Remove the sensor by hand once it is loose.
  • If it binds, turn it back in slightly, add more penetrating oil, then work it out slowly.

Step 6: Prepare the New Sensor

  • Compare the new sensor connector, wire length, and thread size with the old sensor.
  • If the new sensor threads are bare, apply a tiny amount of oxygen-sensor-safe anti-seize compound to the threads only.
  • Do not get anti-seize on the sensor tip.
  • If the sensor already has gray or silver coating on the threads, do not add more anti-seize.

Step 7: Install the New Sensor

  • Start the new sensor by hand to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the threads are angled wrong and can damage the exhaust bung.
  • Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench to tighten the sensor.
  • Torque to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
  • Keep the wire from twisting as you tighten the sensor.
  • Hand-starting protects the exhaust threads.

Step 8: Reconnect and Route the Wiring

  • Plug the sensor connector in until it clicks.
  • Use the trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the harness retainers into their brackets.
  • Make sure the sensor wire is clipped away from the exhaust pipe, driveshaft area, and sharp edges.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to seat a stubborn clip gently.

Step 9: Lower the Vehicle and Reconnect Battery

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Tacoma slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the truck slowly with the floor jack.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Torque battery terminal snugly to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 10: Clear Codes and Check Operation

  • Use an OBD-II scan tool to clear stored oxygen sensor codes.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check under the truck for exhaust leaks near the sensor.
  • Take a 10-15 minute test drive so the engine computer can begin relearning sensor readings.

  • โœ… Confirm the Check Engine Light stays off after a few drive cycles.
  • โœ… Recheck that the sensor wire is not touching the exhaust after the test drive.
  • โœ… If the same code returns, inspect for exhaust leaks, wiring damage, or a mixture problem before replacing more parts.
