🔧 Civic - Oxygen Sensor Replacement

Replacing an oxygen sensor means removing the old sensor from the exhaust and installing a new one so the engine computer can accurately control fuel mixture and emissions. Your Civic uses multiple oxygen sensors, so this guide covers the common replacement process for the upstream air/fuel sensor and downstream oxygen sensor locations.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work only when the exhaust is cool enough to touch. Oxygen sensors thread into the exhaust, which can cause serious burns.
  • ⚠️ Support your Civic with jack stands before going underneath. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging oxygen sensor connectors.
  • ⚠️ Do not use impact tools on oxygen sensors. The exhaust bung threads can be damaged.
  • ⚠️ Avoid twisting the new sensor wiring. The wires are delicate and can fail internally.

Note: Replace only the sensor identified by the trouble code or diagnosis. Bank 1 Sensor 1 is the upstream sensor before the catalytic converter. Bank 1 Sensor 2 is the downstream sensor after the catalytic converter.


📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Civic on level ground and let the exhaust cool completely.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • 🔍 Use an OBD-II scan tool to confirm which sensor is faulty before removal.
  • 🧰 An oxygen sensor socket is a slotted 22mm socket that fits over the sensor wire while gripping the hex body.
  • 🧴 Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads and let it soak for 10-15 minutes.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Secure the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Civic at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side pinch weld jack points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Push the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
  • Never work under only a jack.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Undercover if Needed

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the lower engine undercover bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to release plastic clips without breaking them.
  • Set the undercover aside in the same orientation so reinstalling it is easier.

Step 3: Locate the Correct Oxygen Sensor

  • Use safety glasses and inspect the exhaust path from the turbocharger/catalyst area rearward.
  • The upstream air/fuel ratio sensor is before the catalytic converter and is used for fuel control.
  • The downstream oxygen sensor is after the catalytic converter and is used to monitor catalytic converter efficiency.
  • Match the sensor location to the OBD-II scan tool code before unplugging anything.

Step 4: Unplug the Sensor Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the connector lock tab and unplug the sensor connector.
  • If the connector is tight, use a trim clip removal tool gently to help release the harness clip.
  • Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.
  • Note the wire routing before removal so the new sensor can follow the same path.

Step 5: Remove the Old Sensor

  • Slide the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
  • Use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to loosen the sensor counterclockwise.
  • If it is stuck, apply more penetrating oil and wait several minutes.
  • Remove the sensor by hand once loose.
  • Slow pressure beats sudden force.

Step 6: Prepare the New Sensor

  • Compare the new sensor with the old sensor for connector shape, wire length, and thread size.
  • If the new sensor does not already have anti-seize on the threads, apply a tiny amount of oxygen-sensor-safe anti-seize compound to the threads only.
  • Keep anti-seize away from the sensor tip. The tip is the sensing end and must stay clean.

Step 7: Install the New Sensor

  • Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench to tighten the sensor.
  • Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs)
  • Route the wire exactly like the original and clip it back into its retainers.
  • Plug the connector in until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the Lower Undercover

  • Use the trim clip removal tool by hand to align the plastic clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the undercover bolts.
  • Torque small undercover bolts to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs)

Step 9: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Civic slowly to the ground.

Step 10: Reconnect Battery and Clear Codes

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Torque the battery terminal nut to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
  • Use an OBD-II scan tool to clear stored oxygen sensor codes.
  • Start the engine and check that the check engine light stays off after the system runs its test cycle.

  • ✅ Let the engine idle and listen for exhaust leaks near the replaced sensor.
  • ✅ Take a 10-15 minute test drive with steady cruising and light acceleration.
  • ✅ Recheck for pending codes with an OBD-II scan tool after the drive.
  • ✅ If the same code returns, check wiring, connector pins, exhaust leaks, and fuel trim data before replacing more parts.
