🔧 Pilot - Oxygen Sensor Replacement
This repair replaces a faulty oxygen sensor, also called an O2 sensor. The O2 sensor measures oxygen in the exhaust so the engine computer can adjust fuel mixture and keep emissions under control.
Assumption: This guide covers replacement of a threaded exhaust oxygen/fuel-ratio sensor on your Pilot. Sensor location may be Bank 1 or Bank 2, upstream or downstream, depending on the trouble code.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Exhaust parts get extremely hot. Let your Pilot cool completely before touching the exhaust.
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and support the vehicle with jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses. Rust and dirt can fall when working under the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the sensor connector to reduce the chance of electrical damage.
- ⚠️ Do not twist the vehicle wiring harness. Turn the sensor, not the harness.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Pilot on a flat, solid surface.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Let the exhaust cool for at least 1 hour if the engine was recently running.
- Use an OBD2 scan tool to read the fault code before removal. The code tells you which sensor is bad.
- Common labels: Bank 1 is the cylinder bank that contains cylinder 1, and Sensor 1 is before the catalytic converter while Sensor 2 is after it.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify the Correct Sensor
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to confirm the code and sensor position.
- Typical code meanings include:
- P013x codes usually point to Bank 1 Sensor 1 or Bank 1 Sensor 2.
- P015x codes usually point to Bank 2 Sensor 1 or Bank 2 Sensor 2.
- Sensor 1 is upstream, mounted before the catalytic converter. Sensor 2 is downstream, mounted after the catalytic converter.
- Replace the coded sensor only.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Pilot at the approved front jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the approved support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
Step 3: Remove Underbody Access Panels if Needed
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic push clips from the lower splash shield if it blocks access.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any splash shield bolts.
- Set the clips and bolts aside in a cup or tray.
- Take a photo before removing panels.
Step 4: Locate and Unplug the Sensor Connector
- Follow the oxygen sensor wire from the exhaust pipe up to its electrical connector.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release any connector lock tab.
- Unplug the connector by pulling on the connector body, not the wires.
- If the harness is clipped to a bracket, use the trim clip removal tool to release the clip.
Step 5: Loosen the Old Sensor
- Spray penetrating oil where the sensor threads into the exhaust bung. The bung is the threaded metal fitting welded to the exhaust pipe.
- Wait 5-10 minutes for the penetrating oil to soak in.
- Slide the 7/8-inch oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
- Use the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
- If it is very tight, apply steady pressure. Do not yank hard enough to damage the exhaust pipe.
Step 6: Remove the Old Sensor
- Once loose, continue turning the sensor counterclockwise by hand or with the 7/8-inch oxygen sensor socket.
- Remove the sensor from the exhaust.
- Compare the old sensor to the new part. The connector shape, wire length, and mounting threads should match.
Step 7: Prepare the New Sensor
- Check the new sensor threads. Many replacement sensors already have anti-seize applied.
- If the threads are bare, apply a tiny amount of exhaust sensor anti-seize compound only to the threads.
- Do not get anti-seize on the sensor tip. The tip is the sensing end that sits inside the exhaust stream.
- A little anti-seize goes a long way.
Step 8: Install the New Sensor
- Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first.
- Turn it clockwise several full turns by hand to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the threads are going in crooked and can damage the exhaust bung.
- Use the 7/8-inch oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm to tighten the sensor.
- Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs)
Step 9: Reconnect the Wiring
- Route the sensor wire the same way as the original.
- Use your hands to clip the harness back into its brackets.
- Plug the connector in until it clicks.
- Make sure the wire is not touching the exhaust pipe, heat shields, steering parts, or suspension parts.
Step 10: Reinstall Shields and Lower the Vehicle
- Use the trim clip removal tool to reinstall any plastic clips.
- Use the 10mm socket to reinstall splash shield bolts.
- Tighten splash shield bolts snug only. Do not overtighten plastic shield hardware.
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Pilot slowly to the ground.
Step 11: Reconnect Battery and Clear Codes
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using the 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear the stored trouble code.
- Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
✅ After Repair
- Listen for exhaust leaks near the sensor. A ticking sound may mean the sensor is loose.
- Check that the Check Engine light stays off after clearing codes.
- Drive your Pilot through a normal warm-up cycle so the computer can recheck the sensor.
- If the same code returns, inspect for damaged wiring, exhaust leaks, or fuel/air mixture issues before replacing more parts.
- Some emissions readiness monitors may need several drive cycles before showing “ready” on an OBD2 scan tool.
