🔧 Fit - Oxygen Sensor Replacement

This repair replaces a faulty oxygen sensor, also called an O2 sensor. On your Fit, the oxygen sensors monitor exhaust oxygen so the engine computer can adjust fuel mixture and keep emissions in range.

Difficulty Level: Beginner to Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

Assumption: This guide covers replacing either the upstream air/fuel ratio sensor or the downstream oxygen sensor; follow the matching location below.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work only on a completely cool exhaust. Exhaust parts can burn skin for a long time after driving.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the sensor connector.
  • ⚠️ If raising the vehicle, support it with jack stands. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on the sensor wires. Always unplug the connector body by hand.
  • ⚠️ Avoid getting anti-seize compound on the sensor tip. It can damage the sensor reading.

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension
  • 10mm socket

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Fit on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine and exhaust cool fully before touching anything near the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter.
  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels if lifting the front of the vehicle.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal, then move the cable aside so it cannot touch the post.
  • The upstream sensor is in the exhaust manifold area before the catalytic converter. The downstream sensor is after the catalytic converter under the vehicle.
  • An oxygen sensor socket is a deep 22mm socket with a side slot for the sensor wire.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify the Sensor Location

  • Use safety glasses and mechanic gloves before looking around the exhaust.
  • For the upstream air/fuel ratio sensor, look at the exhaust manifold at the front of the engine.
  • For the downstream oxygen sensor, use a floor jack and jack stands to safely access the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter.
  • Follow the sensor wire from the sensor body to its electrical connector.
  • Match the new sensor before removing the old one.

Step 2: Raise the Vehicle if Replacing the Downstream Sensor

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Fit at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the approved front support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Give the vehicle a light push by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.

Step 3: Apply Penetrating Oil

  • Spray penetrating oil where the sensor threads into the exhaust.
  • Let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
  • Use safety glasses because oil and dirt may drip down.
  • More soak time helps stuck sensors.

Step 4: Disconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the connector lock tab and unplug the sensor connector.
  • If the lock tab is hard to reach, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently to depress the tab.
  • Do not pry hard on the plastic connector. It can break with age.
  • Note how the sensor wire is routed through clips or brackets.

Step 5: Remove the Old Sensor

  • Slide the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
  • Use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
  • If the sensor is stuck, apply more penetrating oil and work it loose slowly.
  • Remove the sensor by hand once it breaks free.
  • Do not twist the wiring harness.

Step 6: Prepare the New Sensor

  • Compare the new sensor connector, wire length, and thread size to the old sensor.
  • If the new sensor threads are not pre-coated, apply a tiny amount of sensor-safe anti-seize compound to the threads only.
  • Keep anti-seize compound away from the sensor tip and vents.

Step 7: Install the New Sensor

  • Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first.
  • Turn it clockwise several full turns by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench to tighten the sensor.
  • Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs)

Step 8: Reconnect and Route the Sensor Wire

  • Route the wire exactly like the original sensor wire.
  • Clip the harness back into any retainers by hand.
  • Plug in the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if a clip needs gentle help seating.
  • Keep the wire away from the exhaust pipe, steering parts, and axle shaft.

Step 9: Lower the Vehicle if Raised

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Fit slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands by hand.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly with the floor jack.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 10: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

Step 11: Clear Trouble Codes

  • Plug an OBD-II scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver side dash.
  • Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the OBD-II scan tool to clear stored oxygen sensor trouble codes.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Fit and listen for exhaust leaks near the sensor area.
  • Check that the Check Engine Light stays off after clearing codes.
  • Let the engine reach normal operating temperature.
  • Take a 10-15 minute test drive with steady cruising and light acceleration.
  • Use the OBD-II scan tool to confirm no oxygen sensor codes return.
  • If the battery was disconnected, reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
