🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Read the Code and Confirm Sensor Position
- Use an OBD2 scan tool to read the stored engine code.
- Match the code to the correct oxygen sensor before removing anything.
- Common codes include P0130-P0135 for upstream sensor faults and P0136-P0141 for downstream sensor faults.
- Replace the coded sensor only.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery.
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
Step 3: Raise and Secure the Vehicle if Needed
- If replacing the downstream sensor, place wheel chocks at the wheels that stay on the ground.
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the proper front jacking point.
- Set your Edge securely on jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before getting underneath.
Step 4: Remove Any Access Shielding
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic push clips from the lower splash shield if it blocks access.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to help release stubborn clips carefully.
- Set clips aside in order so they go back into the same locations.
Step 5: Locate the Oxygen Sensor
- For the upstream sensor, look near the turbocharger/exhaust manifold area at the front side of the engine bay.
- For the downstream sensor, look in the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter from underneath.
- Follow the sensor wire to its electrical connector before loosening the sensor.
- An oxygen sensor socket is a deep socket with a slot cut in the side so the wire can pass through it.
Step 6: Unplug the Sensor Connector
- Press the lock tab on the connector by hand.
- Use a flathead screwdriver only if the lock tab is stuck, and pry gently.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull on the plastic connector body only.
- Release the wiring from any clips using a trim clip removal tool.
Step 7: Loosen the Old Oxygen Sensor
- Spray a small amount of penetrating oil at the sensor threads where it enters the exhaust.
- Wait 5-10 minutes for the oil to work.
- Slide the 7/8-inch oxygen sensor socket over the sensor with the wire through the slot.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
- If it is very tight, apply steady pressure instead of jerking the ratchet.
Step 8: Remove the Old Sensor
- Once loose, unscrew the sensor by hand while wearing mechanic gloves.
- Compare the old sensor with the new oxygen sensor to confirm the connector and wire length match.
- Keep dirt and grease away from the sensing tip of the new sensor.
Step 9: Prepare the New Sensor
- If the new sensor does not already have anti-seize on the threads, apply a very thin coat of anti-seize compound to the threads only.
- Do not put anti-seize on the sensor tip or openings.
- Many new sensors come pre-coated; if so, do not add more.
Step 10: Install the New Oxygen Sensor
- Thread the new oxygen sensor into the exhaust by hand first.
- This prevents cross-threading, which means the threads start crooked and can damage the exhaust bung.
- Use the 7/8-inch oxygen sensor socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten it.
- Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs)
Step 11: Reconnect the Wiring
- Route the new sensor wire exactly like the old one.
- Keep the wire away from the exhaust pipe, turbocharger, steering shaft, and moving parts.
- Push the connector together until it clicks.
- Use the original wiring clips and a trim clip removal tool if needed to reseat harness retainers.
Step 12: Reinstall Access Shielding
- Reinstall the lower splash shield if removed.
- Push plastic clips in by hand.
- Use a flathead screwdriver only to help guide clips into place if needed.
Step 13: Lower the Vehicle and Reconnect Battery
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise your Edge slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly with the floor jack.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten the clamp snugly; do not over-tighten it.
