Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify the Sensor Location
- Use the OBD-II scan tool to read the stored trouble code.
- If the code mentions Sensor 1, replace the upstream air/fuel ratio sensor near the exhaust manifold area.
- If the code mentions Sensor 2, replace the downstream oxygen sensor located after the catalytic converter under the vehicle.
- Match the code before buying parts.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
Step 3: Raise the Vehicle if Replacing the Downstream Sensor
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
- Set the vehicle onto jack stands rated 2-ton minimum at the approved front support points.
- Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before going underneath.
- Never crawl under a jack-only vehicle.
Step 4: Remove Any Access Cover if Needed
- Use a trim clip remover to remove plastic clips from the lower splash shield if it blocks access.
- Use a 10mm socket only if the shield has 10mm fasteners. If used, reinstall snugly; do not overtighten plastic shield hardware.
- Set clips and fasteners aside in order so they go back in the same places.
Step 5: Spray the Sensor Threads
- Use penetrating oil spray where the oxygen sensor screws into the exhaust pipe.
- Let it soak for 5-10 minutes.
- This helps loosen rust and makes the sensor easier to remove.
Step 6: Unplug the Oxygen Sensor Connector
- Follow the sensor wire from the exhaust sensor to its electrical connector.
- Use your fingers to press the connector lock tab and unplug it.
- If the tab is stiff, gently use a flat-blade screwdriver to release the lock.
- Do not pry hard. The connector plastic can break.
Step 7: Remove the Old Sensor
- Slide the wire through the slot in the 22mm oxygen sensor socket.
- Attach the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive extension 6-inch if extra reach is needed.
- Turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove the sensor.
- If it is stuck, apply more penetrating oil spray and wait a few more minutes.
- Slow pressure beats sudden force.
Step 8: Prepare the New Sensor
- Compare the new sensor connector, wire length, and threads to the old sensor.
- If the new sensor already has gray anti-seize on the threads, do not add more.
- If it does not, apply a tiny amount of oxygen-sensor-safe anti-seize compound to the threads only.
- Keep anti-seize away from the sensor tip.
Step 9: Install the New Sensor
- Start the new sensor by hand to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the threads are angled wrong and can damage the exhaust bung.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket with the torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten it.
- Torque to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
- Route the wiring the same way as the original sensor, away from hot exhaust and moving parts.
Step 10: Plug In the Connector
- Push the oxygen sensor connector together until it clicks.
- Use your hand to lightly tug the connector and confirm it is locked.
- Make sure the wire is clipped back into its original holders.
Step 11: Reinstall Any Removed Shields
- Use the trim clip remover by hand to align and reinstall splash shield clips.
- If 10mm fasteners were removed, use a 10mm socket to reinstall them snugly.
- Do not overtighten plastic shield fasteners.
Step 12: Lower the Vehicle and Reconnect the Battery
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
- Use the 10mm wrench to reconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Make the terminal snug, but do not overtighten it.
Step 13: Clear the Code
- Use the OBD-II scan tool to clear the oxygen sensor trouble code.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Check that the check engine light stays off after clearing.
