🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Forester at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands under the approved front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Keep the floor jack nearby as a backup, but do not use it as the only support.
- Shake lightly to confirm stability.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Engine Cover if Needed
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove the plastic clips from the lower splash shield.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to help release stubborn clips carefully.
- Set the splash shield and clips aside in order.
Step 3: Locate the Correct Sensor
- Use safety glasses and a flashlight to inspect the exhaust.
- The upstream air/fuel ratio sensor is threaded into the exhaust before the catalytic converter.
- The downstream oxygen sensor is threaded into the exhaust after the catalytic converter.
- An air/fuel ratio sensor works like an oxygen sensor but gives the engine computer a more precise fuel mixture reading.
- Match the sensor location to the trouble code from your OBD2 scan tool.
Step 4: Unplug the Sensor Connector
- Follow the sensor wire from the exhaust sensor to its electrical connector.
- Use your fingers to press the connector lock tab and unplug it.
- If the lock is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently on the release tab only.
- Do not pull on the wires.
- Connector tabs break easily.
Step 5: Loosen the Old Sensor
- Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads where the sensor enters the exhaust pipe.
- Wait 5-10 minutes for the oil to soak in.
- Fit the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
- An oxygen sensor socket has a slot in the side so the wire can pass through it.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the sensor counterclockwise.
- If it is very tight, apply more penetrating oil and work slowly to avoid damaging the exhaust bung. The bung is the threaded boss welded to the exhaust pipe.
Step 6: Remove the Old Sensor
- Once loose, use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to unscrew the sensor fully.
- Guide the wire out carefully as the sensor comes out.
- Compare the old sensor and new sensor for matching connector shape, wire length, and thread size.
Step 7: Prepare the New Sensor
- Check the new sensor threads.
- If the threads already have gray anti-seize on them, do not add more.
- If the threads are bare, apply a tiny amount of oxygen-sensor-safe anti-seize compound only to the threads.
- Keep anti-seize away from the sensor tip.
- A little anti-seize is enough.
Step 8: Install the New Sensor
- Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first.
- Turn it clockwise several turns by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the sensor.
- Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs)
- Do not over-tighten. The exhaust threads can be damaged.
Step 9: Route and Connect the Wiring
- Route the new sensor wire the same way the original wire was routed.
- Keep the wire away from the exhaust pipe, catalytic converter, axle, and steering components.
- Use the original wire retainers or clips to secure it.
- Push the connector together until it clicks.
- Use your fingers to lightly tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Engine Cover
- Position the lower splash shield back in place.
- Use your hands to install the plastic clips.
- Use the trim clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to seat the clips gently.
Step 11: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack to raise your Forester slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground with the floor jack.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Use the 10mm wrench to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the terminal snugly. Do not overtighten it.
Step 13: Clear the Code and Check Operation
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear the oxygen sensor-related diagnostic trouble code.
- Start the engine and listen for exhaust leaks near the sensor.
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to check that the sensor begins reporting normally as the engine warms up.
