⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • The exhaust gets extremely hot. Let the truck cool completely before starting.
  • Work on level ground with the parking brake set and the transmission in Park.
  • If the sensor wiring is routed near the exhaust, do not let it touch hot parts.
  • If you raise the truck, support it with jack stands. Never rely on the jack alone.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable only if your scan tool or repair method requires it.
  • Do not spray penetrating oil directly into the sensor opening.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Let the exhaust cool fully before touching any sensor or pipe.
  • Raise the truck only if needed for access to the sensor.
  • Use your scan tool to read the code first so you know which sensor is being replaced.
  • Label the sensor before unplugging it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the sensor

  • Find the oxygen sensor on the exhaust system.
  • On this truck, upstream sensors are before the catalytic converter and downstream sensors are after it.
  • If needed, use a flashlight to trace the sensor wire to its connector.

Step 2: Disconnect the sensor connector

  • Use your hands to release the connector lock.
  • If the connector is clipped to the frame or bracket, gently release it without pulling on the wire.
  • Pull the plug, not the wire.

Step 3: Loosen the sensor

  • Spray a small amount of penetrating oil on the sensor threads if it is rusted.
  • Use the oxygen sensor socket, 7/8 inch with a 3/8-inch ratchet or breaker bar to loosen the sensor.
  • If access is tight, add a 3/8-inch extension.
  • Turn counterclockwise to remove.

Step 4: Remove the old sensor

  • Unscrew the sensor by hand once it is loose.
  • Carefully pull the sensor and wire out of the vehicle.
  • Check the threads in the exhaust bung for damage or heavy rust.

Step 5: Prepare the new sensor

  • Compare the new sensor to the old one to make sure the connector and wire length match.
  • If the new sensor threads do not already have coating, apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads only.
  • Do not get anti-seize on the sensing tip.

Step 6: Install the new sensor

  • Thread the new sensor in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the oxygen sensor socket, 7/8 inch to snug it down.
  • Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
  • Route the wire exactly like the original so it stays away from the exhaust.

Step 7: Reconnect and secure the wiring

  • Reconnect the electrical plug until it clicks.
  • Reinstall any wire clips or retainers removed earlier.
  • Make sure the harness is not touching the exhaust or steering parts.

Step 8: Clear codes and verify repair

  • Use the scan tool to clear the stored code.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check for exhaust leaks, warning lights, and scan tool data.

  • Drive the truck for a short test drive and confirm the check engine light stays off.
  • Recheck the sensor wire routing after the engine reaches operating temperature.
  • If the code returns, inspect for exhaust leaks, damaged wiring, or the wrong sensor location.
