🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Secure the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Outback at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the approved front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Push the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before getting underneath.
- Safety first, always.
Step 2: Remove the Underbody Splash Shield if Needed
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the splash shield bolts if the shield blocks access to the exhaust sensor.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release any plastic clips carefully.
- Set the shield and hardware aside in order.
Step 3: Locate the Correct Sensor
- Use safety glasses and look at the exhaust pipe near the engine.
- For the front air/fuel ratio sensor, look for the sensor threaded into the exhaust before the catalytic converter.
- For the rear oxygen sensor, look for the sensor threaded into the exhaust after the catalytic converter.
- Follow the sensor wire to its electrical connector before loosening the sensor.
Step 4: Unplug the Sensor Connector
- Use needle-nose pliers or your fingers to release the wiring harness clip if it is attached to a bracket.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to gently lift the connector lock tab.
- Pull the connector apart by the plastic body, not by the wires.
- Do not yank wiring.
Step 5: Remove the Old Sensor
- Slide the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
- Use the 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
- If the sensor is tight, apply steady pressure. Avoid sudden jerks that can round the sensor.
- Once loose, unscrew the sensor by hand while keeping the wire from twisting.
Step 6: Prepare the New Sensor
- Compare the new sensor to the old sensor. The connector shape, wire length, and sensor tip should match.
- If the new sensor threads already have anti-seize compound, do not add more.
- If the threads are dry, apply a tiny amount of oxygen-sensor-safe anti-seize to the threads only.
- Keep anti-seize away from the sensor tip.
Step 7: Install the New Sensor
- Start the new sensor by hand to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the threads are misaligned and can damage the exhaust.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench rated 10-80 Nm to tighten the sensor.
- Torque to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Route the wire the same way as the original sensor wire.
- Use needle-nose pliers to reattach any harness clips.
Step 8: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the sensor connector together by hand until it clicks.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to guide the connector lock into place.
- Make sure the wire is away from the exhaust pipe, catalytic converter, and moving parts.
Step 9: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Lift the splash shield into position by hand.
- Use a 12mm socket to reinstall the bolts.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) for small splash shield bolts.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to reinstall any plastic clips.
Step 10: Lower the Vehicle and Reconnect the Battery
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) for the battery terminal clamp.
Step 11: Clear Codes and Check Operation
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear the stored trouble codes.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Use safety glasses and check underneath for exhaust leaks or loose wiring.
- Take a short drive so the engine computer can begin checking the new sensor.
