📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tacoma on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels if lifting the front, or in front of the front wheels if lifting the rear.
  • Let the exhaust cool completely before starting.
  • Use an OBD2 scan tool to read the code and identify the exact sensor. “Bank” means engine side; Bank 1 is the side with cylinder 1, and Bank 2 is the opposite side. “Sensor 1” is before the catalytic converter, and “Sensor 2” is after it.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket before unplugging the sensor.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Read the Fault Code

  • Use an OBD2 scan tool to read the check-engine light code.
  • Write down the code and sensor position, such as Bank 1 Sensor 1, Bank 2 Sensor 1, Bank 1 Sensor 2, or Bank 2 Sensor 2.
  • Replace the coded sensor only.

Step 2: Cool and Secure the Truck

  • Let your Tacoma sit until the exhaust is cool to the touch.
  • Place wheel chocks at the wheels that stay on the ground.
  • If more room is needed, lift the truck with a floor jack, rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Support it with jack stands, rated 3-ton minimum.

Step 3: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.

Step 4: Locate the Correct Oxygen Sensor

  • Use a shop light to follow the exhaust pipe to the sensor listed by the OBD2 code.
  • Sensor 1 is threaded into the exhaust before the catalytic converter.
  • Sensor 2 is threaded into the exhaust after the catalytic converter.
  • Trace the sensor wire to its electrical connector before removing anything.

Step 5: Unclip the Sensor Wiring

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to release any plastic wire retainers.
  • Press the connector lock by hand and unplug the sensor connector.
  • If the connector is tight, gently wiggle the connector body. Do not pull on the wires.

Step 6: Remove the Old Sensor

  • Slide the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
  • Use a 3/8-inch ratchet and 3/8-inch extension set to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
  • If space is tight, use a 22mm wrench instead.
  • Remove the sensor by hand once it breaks loose.
  • Slow, steady pressure prevents rounding.

Step 7: Prepare the New Sensor

  • Compare the new oxygen sensor to the old one. The connector shape, wire length, and threaded end should match.
  • If the new sensor threads are not pre-coated, apply a very small amount of sensor-safe anti-seize compound to the threads only.
  • Keep anti-seize away from the sensor tip. The tip is the small sensing end that sits inside the exhaust stream.

Step 8: Install the New Sensor

  • Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket and torque wrench, 3/8-inch drive to tighten it.
  • Torque to 44 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
  • If access prevents using the oxygen sensor socket, use a 22mm wrench and tighten snugly without over-tightening.

Step 9: Route and Connect the Wiring

  • Route the sensor wire along the same path as the original wiring.
  • Use the original clips or replacement wire harness clips to keep the wire away from the exhaust, driveshaft, and steering parts.
  • Plug in the connector until it clicks.
  • Use a shop light to confirm the wire is not twisted or touching hot exhaust metal.

Step 10: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery terminal.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the terminal clamp.
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

Step 11: Clear the Code

  • Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear stored diagnostic trouble codes.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Check that the check-engine light stays off after restart.

  • Listen for exhaust leaks around the sensor. A ticking sound can mean the sensor is loose.
  • Check that the sensor wiring stays clear of hot exhaust parts.
  • Drive your Tacoma for 10-20 minutes with a mix of city and steady-speed driving.
  • Re-scan with the OBD2 scan tool after the test drive to confirm no oxygen sensor codes returned.
