- Park your Odyssey on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels before lifting the front.
- Read the diagnostic code with an OBD2 scan tool. OBD2 means the standard scan system used to read engine fault codes.
- Identify the sensor location from the code:
- Bank 1 is the rear cylinder bank, closest to the firewall.
- Bank 2 is the front cylinder bank, closest to the radiator.
- Sensor 1 is upstream, before the catalytic converter.
- Sensor 2 is downstream, after the catalytic converter.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Cool and Secure the Vehicle
- Let the exhaust cool completely before touching anything underneath.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Odyssey at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands under the proper front support points, then lower the vehicle gently onto them.
- Shake gently to confirm stability.
Step 2: Remove Lower Access Panels if Needed
- Use a flat trim clip remover to remove any lower splash shield clips blocking access.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove splash shield bolts if equipped.
- Set clips and bolts aside in a small container so they do not get lost.
Step 3: Locate the Correct Oxygen Sensor
- Use the trouble code to match the correct sensor before unplugging anything.
- For Bank 2 Sensor 1, look near the front exhaust manifold by the radiator side.
- For Bank 1 Sensor 1, look near the rear exhaust manifold by the firewall side.
- For Sensor 2, look after the catalytic converter in the exhaust pipe.
- Replace only the coded sensor.
Step 4: Unplug the Sensor Connector
- Follow the sensor wire up to its electrical connector.
- Press the connector lock tab by hand and unplug it.
- If the connector is stubborn, use a flat trim clip remover gently on the lock tab.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 5: Loosen the Old Sensor
- Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads where it enters the exhaust pipe.
- Wait 5-10 minutes to let the oil soak in.
- Slide the 22mm oxygen sensor socket over the sensor wire and onto the sensor hex.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive extension to turn the sensor counterclockwise.
- If it is tight, use slow steady pressure. Do not jerk the ratchet.
Step 6: Remove the Old Sensor
- Once loose, unscrew the sensor by hand.
- Compare the old sensor to the new sensor before installation.
- Confirm the connector shape, wire length, and thread size match.
Step 7: Prepare the New Sensor
- Check the new sensor threads.
- If the threads are already coated, do not add anti-seize.
- If the threads are bare, apply a very small amount of oxygen-sensor-safe anti-seize compound to the threads only.
- Keep anti-seize away from the sensor tip.
Step 8: Install the New Sensor
- Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand first.
- This prevents cross-threading, which means damaging the threads by starting the sensor crooked.
- Use the 22mm oxygen sensor socket with a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench.
- Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the Wiring
- Route the sensor wire the same way the original wire was routed.
- Keep the wire away from the exhaust pipe, steering parts, and moving components.
- Push the connector together until it clicks.
- Reinstall any wire clips by hand.
Step 10: Reinstall Shields and Lower Vehicle
- Reinstall splash shield bolts with a 10mm socket.
- Reinstall plastic clips with your hands or a flat trim clip remover.
- Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly.
- Remove the jack stands, then lower your Odyssey carefully.
Step 11: Reconnect Battery and Clear Codes
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Use an OBD2 scan tool to clear the engine code.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
