🔧 1500 - Outer Tie Rod End Replacement

This repair replaces a worn outer tie rod end, which connects the steering rack to the front wheel knuckle and helps control steering direction. A bad tie rod end can cause loose steering, clunking, uneven tire wear, or wandering while driving.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your 1500 on flat, solid ground with the front wheels pointed straight ahead.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • A tie rod end puller is a small press tool that separates the tie rod from the steering knuckle without damaging parts.
  • A cotter pin is a small bent metal safety pin that keeps the nut from backing off.
  • A castle nut is the slotted nut used with a cotter pin on steering parts.
  • Plan to get a professional alignment immediately after the repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts about one turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen before lifting for stability.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your 1500 at a proper front frame or crossmember lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame rails.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching as a backup, but do not rely on it alone.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use the 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat under the frame as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Mark the Tie Rod Position

  • Use a paint marker to mark where the outer tie rod end meets the inner tie rod threads.
  • Use a tape measure to measure from the center of the tie rod stud to a fixed point on the inner tie rod.
  • Write the measurement down before removing anything.
  • This helps keep alignment close.

Step 5: Loosen the Jam Nut

  • Use a 24mm open-end wrench on the jam nut behind the outer tie rod end.
  • Turn the jam nut loose only about 1/4 to 1/2 turn.
  • The jam nut locks the outer tie rod end in place on the threaded inner tie rod.
  • If the inner tie rod tries to spin, hold it steady with an adjustable wrench.

Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the tie rod end stud.
  • Discard the old cotter pin. Do not reuse it.

Step 7: Remove the Castle Nut

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the castle nut from the tie rod end stud.
  • If the nut is tight, use the 1/2-inch drive breaker bar with the 21mm socket.

Step 8: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle

  • Install the tie rod end puller (specialty) over the tie rod end and steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the puller with a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet until the tie rod end pops free.
  • If needed, tap the side of the steering knuckle lightly with a hammer while tension is applied.
  • Do not strike the new or old tie rod stud directly.

Step 9: Count the Turns and Remove the Old Tie Rod End

  • Turn the outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the inner tie rod.
  • Count every full turn as you remove it.
  • Write down the number of turns.
  • Install the new one the same count.

Step 10: Install the New Outer Tie Rod End

  • Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand.
  • Use the same number of turns counted during removal.
  • Line it up with your paint mark and measurement as closely as possible.
  • Keep the jam nut loose for now.

Step 11: Attach the Tie Rod End to the Steering Knuckle

  • Insert the new tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Install the castle nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench rated to 150 ft-lbs to tighten the nut to Torque to 61 Nm (45 ft-lbs).
  • If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until it lines up. Do not loosen it to align the hole.

Step 12: Install the New Cotter Pin

  • Slide the new cotter pin through the hole in the tie rod end stud.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to bend the cotter pin legs around the castle nut.
  • Make sure the cotter pin cannot fall out.

Step 13: Tighten the Jam Nut

  • Hold the outer tie rod end steady with an adjustable wrench.
  • Use the 24mm open-end wrench to tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod end.
  • Use the 24mm open-end wrench and torque wrench rated to 150 ft-lbs if your torque wrench supports a crowfoot adapter, and tighten to Torque to 75 Nm (55 ft-lbs).
  • If you do not have a crowfoot setup, tighten the jam nut firmly and have it checked during alignment.

Step 14: Grease the Tie Rod End if Applicable

  • If the new tie rod end has a grease fitting, use a chassis grease tube with a grease gun if supplied separately.
  • Add grease only until the dust boot slightly expands.
  • Do not overfill the boot.

Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Put the wheel back on the hub by hand.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 16: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the truck fully to the ground.
  • Use the 22mm socket and torque wrench rated to 150 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel slowly from left to right and listen for binding or clunks.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly at first in a safe area. Make sure the steering wheel returns normally.
  • ✅ Do not drive long distances before alignment. The toe angle will likely be off.
  • ✅ Schedule a front wheel alignment immediately after replacing any tie rod end.
  • ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 22mm socket and torque wrench.
