This repair replaces the outer tie rod end, which connects the steering rack to the front wheel knuckle. A worn tie rod end can cause loose steering, clunking, uneven tire wear, or poor alignment.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a flat, solid surface and support the RAV4 with jack stands before going under or near the wheel area.
  • ⚠️ Do not rely on a jack alone. A jack lifts the vehicle; jack stands hold it safely.
  • ⚠️ The RAV4 Hybrid has high-voltage components, but this steering repair does not require touching the orange high-voltage cables.
  • ⚠️ Keep the ignition OFF and the key away from the vehicle so the electric power steering cannot wake up unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ A wheel alignment is required after replacing a tie rod end, even if you count threads carefully.
  • ⚠️ Replace tie rod ends in pairs if both sides show looseness, torn boots, or corrosion.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park the RAV4 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels to stop the vehicle from rolling.
  • Keep the ignition OFF and move the smart key at least 15 feet away from the vehicle.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the old tie rod position before removal. This helps keep the steering close enough to drive carefully to an alignment shop.
  • A tie rod end puller is a clamp-style tool that safely separates the tie rod stud from the steering knuckle without hammering on steering parts.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen before lifting the vehicle.

Step 2: Raise and Support the RAV4

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of the RAV4 at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching the jacking point as a backup.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Mark and Measure the Old Tie Rod Position

  • Use a paint marker to mark the threads where the outer tie rod end meets the inner tie rod.
  • Use a tape measure to measure from the inner tie rod jam nut to the center of the tie rod end stud.
  • Write this measurement down.
  • The jam nut is the lock nut on the threaded steering rod that holds the tie rod end in place.

Step 5: Loosen the Jam Nut

  • Spray the jam nut area with penetrating oil if rusty.
  • Use a 19mm wrench on the jam nut and a 17mm wrench on the tie rod flats if needed.
  • Loosen the jam nut about one turn only.
  • Do not move the jam nut far from your paint mark.

Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin and Nut

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the tie rod end stud.
  • A cotter pin is a small bent metal safety pin that keeps the nut from backing off.
  • Use a 19mm socket to remove the tie rod end nut from the steering knuckle.
  • If the nut is a castle nut, note its orientation before removal.

Step 7: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Knuckle

  • Install the outer tie rod end puller over the tie rod end and steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the puller using the correct drive on the tool until the tie rod stud pops loose from the knuckle.
  • Do not hit the aluminum steering knuckle hard with a hammer.
  • The pop sound is normal.

Step 8: Unscrew the Old Tie Rod End

  • Turn the old tie rod end counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the inner tie rod.
  • Count the exact number of turns as it comes off.
  • Write down the number of turns.
  • This helps place the new part close to the old alignment setting.

Step 9: Install the New Tie Rod End

  • Thread the new front outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand.
  • Use the same number of turns you counted during removal.
  • Line it up with your paint mark and measurement as closely as possible.
  • Do not tighten the jam nut yet.

Step 10: Attach the New Tie Rod End to the Steering Knuckle

  • Insert the new tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Install the new nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the tie rod end nut to Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
  • If using a castle nut, continue tightening slightly only until the cotter pin hole lines up. Do not loosen the nut to line up the hole.

Step 11: Install the New Cotter Pin

  • Slide the new cotter pin through the hole in the tie rod stud.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to bend the cotter pin ends around the nut.
  • Make sure the cotter pin cannot rub the wheel or brake parts.

Step 12: Tighten the Jam Nut

  • Hold the tie rod end steady with a 17mm wrench.
  • Use a 19mm wrench to tighten the jam nut against the new tie rod end.
  • Tighten securely to the original marked position.
  • Torque to 74 Nm (55 ft-lbs) if your wrench access allows a torque wrench adapter; otherwise tighten firmly and have it verified during alignment.

Step 13: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back onto the hub.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 14: Lower the RAV4 and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the RAV4 fully to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the RAV4 and turn the steering wheel slowly left and right to check for smooth movement.
  • Look behind the wheel and confirm the tie rod boot is not twisted and the cotter pin is secure.
  • Drive slowly in a safe area and check that the steering wheel returns normally.
  • Do not drive at highway speed until a professional front wheel alignment is completed.
  • If the steering wheel is badly off-center or the RAV4 pulls hard, stop driving and have it towed for alignment.
