🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen before lifting for stability.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Tucson at the front center jacking point or the correct side pinch weld area.
- Place jack stands under the approved front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching as a backup support.
Step 3: Remove the Wheel
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove the front wheel and set it flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Mark the Tie Rod Position
- Use the wire brush to clean the threads around the outer tie rod end and jam nut.
- Spray the area with penetrating oil and let it soak for a few minutes.
- Use the paint marker to mark the tie rod threads where the jam nut sits.
- Use the tape measure to measure from the jam nut to the center of the tie rod stud.
- Write down the measurement before removing anything.
- This helps preserve steering alignment.
Step 5: Loosen the Jam Nut
- Use a 19mm wrench on the jam nut behind the outer tie rod end.
- Hold the outer tie rod end steady with a 17mm wrench if needed.
- Turn the jam nut loose only about 1/4 to 1/2 turn.
- Do not move the jam nut far from your paint mark.
- The jam nut is the locking nut that keeps the outer tie rod end from turning on the inner tie rod threads.
Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin and Castle Nut
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the tie rod end stud.
- Use a 17mm socket or 19mm socket with the ratchet to remove the castle nut from the tie rod end stud.
- If the nut is rusty, apply penetrating oil and work slowly.
- Discard the old cotter pin. Do not reuse it.
Step 7: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle
- Install the tie rod end puller over the tie rod end stud and steering knuckle.
- Use the correct socket and ratchet on the puller screw until the stud pops loose.
- Remove the tie rod end stud from the steering knuckle.
- Do not use a pickle fork unless replacing the part and boot damage is not a concern.
- The pop sound is normal.
Step 8: Unscrew the Old Tie Rod End
- Turn the old outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the inner tie rod.
- Count the exact number of turns during removal.
- Write down the turn count.
- Keep the jam nut in place near the paint mark.
Step 9: Install the New Tie Rod End
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand.
- Use the same number of turns counted during removal.
- Line it up close to your paint mark and measurement.
- Make sure the tie rod end stud points down into the steering knuckle opening.
Step 10: Connect the Tie Rod End to the Steering Knuckle
- Insert the new tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install the new castle nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 17mm socket or 19mm socket with the torque wrench to tighten the tie rod end castle nut.
- Torque to 34-44 Nm (25-32 ft-lbs).
- If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until it lines up. Do not loosen the nut to align the hole.
- Install the new cotter pin with needle-nose pliers and bend the ends around the nut.
Step 11: Tighten the Jam Nut
- Use the 17mm wrench to hold the new outer tie rod end steady.
- Use the 19mm wrench to tighten the jam nut against the new tie rod end.
- Torque to 50-60 Nm (37-44 ft-lbs) if using a suitable torque wrench adapter.
- If no adapter is available, tighten it firmly while keeping the tie rod end aligned.
- Do not twist the rubber boot.
Step 12: Reinstall the Wheel
- Place the wheel back onto the hub.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 13: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Tucson fully to the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 108-127 Nm (80-94 ft-lbs).

- ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked and listen for rubbing, popping, or binding.
