📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🧤 Put on safety glasses and mechanic gloves.
  • 🛞 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • 📏 A tie rod end puller is a small press tool that separates the tie rod from the steering knuckle without damaging the rubber boot or metal parts.
  • 📏 A castle nut is a slotted nut that uses a cotter pin to keep it from loosening.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen before lifting for stability.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Tucson at the front center jacking point or the correct side pinch weld area.
  • Place jack stands under the approved front support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching as a backup support.

Step 3: Remove the Wheel

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the front wheel and set it flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Mark the Tie Rod Position

  • Use the wire brush to clean the threads around the outer tie rod end and jam nut.
  • Spray the area with penetrating oil and let it soak for a few minutes.
  • Use the paint marker to mark the tie rod threads where the jam nut sits.
  • Use the tape measure to measure from the jam nut to the center of the tie rod stud.
  • Write down the measurement before removing anything.
  • This helps preserve steering alignment.

Step 5: Loosen the Jam Nut

  • Use a 19mm wrench on the jam nut behind the outer tie rod end.
  • Hold the outer tie rod end steady with a 17mm wrench if needed.
  • Turn the jam nut loose only about 1/4 to 1/2 turn.
  • Do not move the jam nut far from your paint mark.
  • The jam nut is the locking nut that keeps the outer tie rod end from turning on the inner tie rod threads.

Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin and Castle Nut

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the tie rod end stud.
  • Use a 17mm socket or 19mm socket with the ratchet to remove the castle nut from the tie rod end stud.
  • If the nut is rusty, apply penetrating oil and work slowly.
  • Discard the old cotter pin. Do not reuse it.

Step 7: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle

  • Install the tie rod end puller over the tie rod end stud and steering knuckle.
  • Use the correct socket and ratchet on the puller screw until the stud pops loose.
  • Remove the tie rod end stud from the steering knuckle.
  • Do not use a pickle fork unless replacing the part and boot damage is not a concern.
  • The pop sound is normal.

Step 8: Unscrew the Old Tie Rod End

  • Turn the old outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the inner tie rod.
  • Count the exact number of turns during removal.
  • Write down the turn count.
  • Keep the jam nut in place near the paint mark.

Step 9: Install the New Tie Rod End

  • Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand.
  • Use the same number of turns counted during removal.
  • Line it up close to your paint mark and measurement.
  • Make sure the tie rod end stud points down into the steering knuckle opening.

Step 10: Connect the Tie Rod End to the Steering Knuckle

  • Insert the new tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new castle nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 17mm socket or 19mm socket with the torque wrench to tighten the tie rod end castle nut.
  • Torque to 34-44 Nm (25-32 ft-lbs).
  • If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until it lines up. Do not loosen the nut to align the hole.
  • Install the new cotter pin with needle-nose pliers and bend the ends around the nut.

Step 11: Tighten the Jam Nut

  • Use the 17mm wrench to hold the new outer tie rod end steady.
  • Use the 19mm wrench to tighten the jam nut against the new tie rod end.
  • Torque to 50-60 Nm (37-44 ft-lbs) if using a suitable torque wrench adapter.
  • If no adapter is available, tighten it firmly while keeping the tie rod end aligned.
  • Do not twist the rubber boot.

Step 12: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back onto the hub.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 13: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Tucson fully to the ground.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 108-127 Nm (80-94 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked and listen for rubbing, popping, or binding.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly at first in a safe area.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or the vehicle pulls, do not ignore it.
  • ✅ Schedule a professional front wheel alignment immediately after replacing a tie rod end.
  • ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after the first short drive.
  • ✅ Avoid highway speeds until the alignment is completed.
