📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Ranger on level ground with the steering wheel centered.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🛞 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • 📏 Count the turns when removing the old tie rod end; this helps keep the alignment close enough to drive carefully to an alignment shop.
  • 🧰 A castle nut is a nut with slots in the top; a cotter pin passes through it to keep it from loosening.
  • 🧰 A tie rod end puller is a small press tool that separates the tapered stud without damaging the steering knuckle.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen before lifting for stability.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Truck

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Ranger at a proper front frame or crossmember lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame.
  • Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands.
  • Gently shake the truck by hand to make sure it is stable before removing the wheel.

Step 3: Remove the Wheel

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it flat under the side of the truck as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Clean and Mark the Tie Rod Position

  • Use a wire brush to clean the threads where the outer tie rod end meets the inner tie rod.
  • Spray the jam nut and threads with penetrating oil.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the old tie rod end on the threads.
  • Use a tape measure to measure from a fixed point on the inner tie rod to the center of the tie rod stud, if accessible.
  • This helps preserve toe alignment.

Step 5: Loosen the Jam Nut

  • The jam nut locks the outer tie rod end in place on the threaded inner tie rod.
  • Use the correct-size metric wrench from 10mm-24mm set on the jam nut.
  • Use an adjustable wrench on the outer tie rod body if it tries to turn.
  • Loosen the jam nut only about 1/4 to 1/2 turn.
  • Do not spin it far away from the original position.

Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten the bent ends of the cotter pin at the tie rod stud.
  • Pull the cotter pin out of the castle nut.
  • If the cotter pin breaks, use the needle-nose pliers to remove all loose pieces before removing the nut.

Step 7: Remove the Castle Nut

  • Use the correct-size metric socket from 10mm-24mm set and a ratchet to remove the castle nut from the tie rod stud.
  • If the stud spins, press down on the tie rod end by hand while loosening the nut with the metric socket.
  • Keep the old nut nearby only for comparison; install the new nut during reassembly.

Step 8: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle

  • Install the tie rod end puller over the steering knuckle and tie rod stud.
  • Tighten the puller screw using the correct-size metric socket from 10mm-24mm set until the stud pops free.
  • If using a ball joint separator fork, place it between the tie rod end and knuckle, then tap it with a 16 oz hammer.
  • Do not strike the aluminum or machined steering knuckle directly with the hammer.

Step 9: Count Turns and Remove the Old Tie Rod End

  • Turn the outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the inner tie rod.
  • Count every full turn and half turn as it comes off.
  • Write down the number of turns.
  • Example: “18 and 1/2 turns.”

Step 10: Install the New Tie Rod End

  • Apply a light coat of anti-seize compound to the inner tie rod threads.
  • Thread the new outer tie rod end on by hand the same number of turns you counted during removal.
  • Align it close to the paint mark made earlier.
  • Do not fully tighten the jam nut yet.

Step 11: Attach the Tie Rod End to the Steering Knuckle

  • Insert the new tie rod stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Install the new castle nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the correct-size metric socket from 10mm-24mm set and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the castle nut.
  • Torque to 80 Nm (59 ft-lbs).
  • If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the castle nut slightly more until the slot lines up with the hole.
  • Never loosen the castle nut to line up the cotter pin.

Step 12: Install the New Cotter Pin

  • Slide the new cotter pin through the hole in the tie rod stud.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to bend the cotter pin ends around the castle nut.
  • Make sure the cotter pin cannot fall out.

Step 13: Tighten the Jam Nut

  • Hold the outer tie rod end steady with an adjustable wrench.
  • Use the correct-size metric wrench from 10mm-24mm set to tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod end.
  • Torque to 70 Nm (52 ft-lbs).
  • Make sure the tie rod end boot is not twisted.

Step 14: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back onto the hub.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the truck fully to the ground.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock while parked and listen for binding, popping, or rubbing.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area and confirm the steering feels normal.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center or the truck pulls, drive carefully and schedule alignment immediately.
  • ✅ Get a professional front-end alignment as soon as possible after replacing any tie rod end.
  • ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench.
