- Count or measure the exposed threads on the old tie rod end before removal. This helps get the new one close enough to drive to the alignment shop.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the front end
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of the truck at the proper frame or crossmember lift point.
- Set the truck securely on jack stands.
- Remove the front wheel with the 21mm lug wrench.
Step 2: Mark the current position
- Use a paint marker to mark the tie rod end position on the threaded shaft.
- Count the exposed threads or measure the length from the jam nut to the end of the tie rod.
- Keep the new part close to this length.
Step 3: Remove the cotter pin and castle nut
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the tie rod end stud.
- Use the 19mm wrench to remove the castle nut from the stud.
- If the stud spins, apply upward pressure on the joint with a jack or use the tie rod end puller (specialty) to hold it while loosening the nut.
Step 4: Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle
- Use the tie rod end puller (specialty) to pop the stud out of the knuckle.
- Do not hammer on the steering knuckle if you can avoid it.
- A puller prevents damage.
Step 5: Remove the old tie rod end
- Use the 17mm socket and 19mm wrench to loosen the jam nut.
- Unscrew the old tie rod end from the threaded shaft, counting the turns as you remove it.
- Write down the turn count so the new part can be installed close to the same length.
Step 6: Install the new tie rod end
- Thread the new tie rod end onto the shaft the same number of turns as the old one.
- Tighten the jam nut with the 17mm socket and 19mm wrench.
- Insert the stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install the new castle nut and tighten it with the 19mm wrench.
- Torque the castle nut to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
- If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten slightly more until it does. Do not loosen the nut to align it.
Step 7: Secure with a new cotter pin
- Use needle-nose pliers to install the new cotter pin through the nut and stud.
- Bend the ends of the cotter pin fully over so it cannot fall out.
Step 8: Reinstall the wheel and lower the truck
- Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
- Lower the truck with the floor jack.
- Use the torque wrench and 21mm lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque the lug nuts to 131 Nm (97 ft-lbs).

- Check that the steering wheel is roughly centered.
- Drive only enough to get to a professional alignment shop.
- Ask for a front-end alignment after replacing the tie rod end.
