📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Pilot on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 📏 Before removing the tie rod end, measure and mark its position. This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive carefully to an alignment shop.
- 🔩 Spray penetrating oil on the tie rod jam nut and the tie rod stud nut. Let it soak for several minutes.
- 🧰 A jam nut is the lock nut on the inner tie rod threads that holds the outer tie rod end in position.
- 🧰 A tie rod end puller is a tool that presses the tie rod stud out of the steering knuckle without damaging nearby parts.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen while tire is on ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Pilot
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Pilot at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the proper front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the lift point as a backup.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and set it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Mark and Measure the Existing Tie Rod Position
- Use a paint marker to mark the inner tie rod threads where the outer tie rod end meets the jam nut.
- Use a tape measure to measure from the center of the tie rod stud to a fixed point on the inner tie rod or jam nut.
- Write this measurement down before removal.
- This helps preserve steering alignment temporarily.
Step 5: Loosen the Tie Rod Jam Nut
- Use a wire brush to clean the exposed threads.
- Apply penetrating oil to the jam nut area.
- Use a 19mm open-end wrench on the jam nut and a 17mm open-end wrench on the tie rod end flats if needed.
- Loosen the jam nut about 1/4 turn only. Do not move it far from its original position.
- If tight, use controlled pressure. Do not round the nut.
Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin and Castle Nut
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten the bent ends of the cotter pin.
- Use side cutters or needle-nose pliers to pull the cotter pin out of the tie rod stud.
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the castle nut from the tie rod end stud.
- A castle nut has slots on top so a cotter pin can lock it in place.
Step 7: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle
- Install the tie rod end puller (specialty) over the tie rod end stud and steering knuckle.
- Tighten the puller with the correct drive tool from the puller kit until the stud pops free.
- If needed, use a ball-peen hammer to tap the side of the steering knuckle while tension is applied by the puller.
- Do not hammer directly on the tie rod stud if you plan to compare it or return it as a core.
- The pop sound is normal.
Step 8: Count Turns and Remove the Old Tie Rod End
- Turn the outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the inner tie rod.
- Count the exact number of full turns as it comes off.
- Write the number down.
- Leave the jam nut close to its original marked position.
Step 9: Install the New Outer Tie Rod End
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand.
- Turn it clockwise the same number of turns counted during removal.
- Use the tape measure to compare your original measurement.
- Use the paint marker reference mark to get the position as close as possible.
- Do not fully tighten the jam nut yet.
Step 10: Seat the Tie Rod Stud in the Steering Knuckle
- Insert the new tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Install the new castle nut by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the castle nut to Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
- If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the castle nut slightly more until the next slot lines up. Never loosen it to align the hole.
Step 11: Install the New Cotter Pin
- Slide the new cotter pin through the tie rod stud hole.
- Use needle-nose pliers to bend both cotter pin legs around the castle nut.
- Make sure the cotter pin cannot slide back out.
Step 12: Tighten the Jam Nut
- Hold the tie rod end steady with a 17mm open-end wrench.
- Use a 19mm open-end wrench to tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod end.
- Tighten the jam nut firmly while keeping the tie rod end straight.
- If using a crowfoot attachment with a torque wrench, tighten the jam nut to Torque to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Reinstall the Wheel
- Place the wheel back on the hub by hand.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first.
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 14: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise your Pilot slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Lower the vehicle until the tire touches the ground.
- Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).
Step 15: Basic Steering Check
- Start your Pilot and turn the steering wheel slowly left and right.
- Listen for clunks and make sure the wheel turns smoothly.
- Use safety glasses and visually check that the cotter pin, castle nut, and jam nut are secure.

- ✅ Drive slowly at first in a safe area and confirm the steering wheel returns normally after turns.
- ✅ Schedule a professional front wheel alignment as soon as possible. This repair changes toe angle, which is the inward or outward pointing direction of the tires.
- ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 19mm socket and torque wrench: Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).
- ✅ If the steering wheel is badly off-center, the vehicle pulls hard, or tires squeal, do not continue driving except directly to alignment service.
