🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen wheels before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your Civic at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper front side pinch weld support points.
- Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before working.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Mark the Tie Rod Position
- Use a paint marker to mark where the outer tie rod end meets the inner tie rod threads.
- Use a tape measure to measure from the center of the tie rod end stud to a fixed point on the inner tie rod.
- Write down the measurement.
- This helps keep the steering close enough to drive carefully to an alignment shop.
- Marking helps preserve alignment.
Step 5: Loosen the Jam Nut
- The jam nut is the lock nut behind the outer tie rod end.
- Use a 19mm wrench on the jam nut.
- Use a 17mm wrench on the tie rod end flats if needed to hold it steady.
- Loosen the jam nut about one turn only.
- Do not move the jam nut far from your paint mark.
Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten the bent ends of the cotter pin.
- Pull the cotter pin out of the tie rod end stud.
- Discard the old cotter pin. Do not reuse it.
Step 7: Remove the Castle Nut
- The castle nut is the slotted nut on top of the tie rod end stud.
- Use a 17mm socket and ratchet wrench to remove the castle nut.
- If the stud spins, apply light upward pressure under the tie rod end while loosening the nut.
Step 8: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Knuckle
- Use a tie rod end puller (specialty) to press the tie rod end stud out of the steering knuckle.
- A tie rod end puller is a small press tool that safely separates the tapered stud without damaging the steering knuckle.
- Do not strike the threaded stud with a hammer.
Step 9: Count Turns While Removing the Old Tie Rod End
- Turn the old outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the inner tie rod.
- Count the exact number of turns until it comes off.
- Write down the turn count.
- This helps install the new part in nearly the same position.
Step 10: Install the New Outer Tie Rod End
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand.
- Use the same number of turns you counted during removal.
- Align it with your paint marker reference mark and measurement.
- Do not fully tighten the jam nut yet.
Step 11: Attach the Tie Rod End to the Steering Knuckle
- Insert the new tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Install the new castle nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the castle nut to Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
- If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the castle nut slightly more until it lines up. Do not loosen the nut to align the hole.
Step 12: Install the New Cotter Pin
- Slide the new cotter pin through the hole in the tie rod end stud.
- Use needle-nose pliers to bend the cotter pin ends around the castle nut.
- Make sure the cotter pin cannot fall out.
Step 13: Tighten the Jam Nut
- Hold the outer tie rod end steady with a 17mm wrench.
- Use a 19mm wrench to tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod end.
- Tighten the jam nut firmly to Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs) if using a compatible torque wrench setup.
- If you cannot torque it with your tools, tighten it snugly and have the alignment shop verify final torque.
Step 14: Reinstall the Wheel
- Place the wheel back onto the hub.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 15: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower your Civic fully to the ground.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked to check for smooth movement.
- Drive slowly at first and listen for clunks or rubbing noises.
- If the steering wheel is off-center or the vehicle pulls, stop driving except to reach an alignment shop.
- Get a professional front wheel alignment as soon as possible.
- After 25-50 miles, recheck the wheel lug nut torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
