🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 19mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about 1/2 turn while the tire is still on the ground.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loose on ground, remove in air.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack under the front crossmember to lift the front of your Colorado.
- Place jack stands under the approved front frame support points.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Shake the truck lightly by hand to make sure it is stable before removing the wheel.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel
- Use a 19mm socket and ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat under the frame area as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Mark the Tie Rod Position
- Use a paint marker to mark where the outer tie rod end meets the jam nut.
- Use a tape measure to measure from the center of the tie rod stud to a fixed point on the inner tie rod.
- Write this measurement down. This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive to an alignment shop.
- This does not replace alignment.
Step 5: Loosen the Jam Nut
- Use a 22mm wrench on the jam nut.
- Hold the outer tie rod end with an adjustable wrench if it tries to turn.
- Turn the jam nut loose about 1/4 turn only. Do not spin it far down the inner tie rod.
- If the nut is rusty, clean the threads with a wire brush and apply penetrating oil.
Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull the cotter pin from the tie rod stud.
- A cotter pin is a small safety pin that keeps the castle nut from backing off.
- Discard the old cotter pin. Do not reuse it.
Step 7: Remove the Tie Rod Stud Nut
- Use a 21mm socket and ratchet to remove the castle nut from the outer tie rod stud.
- If the stud spins, apply upward pressure under the tie rod end with the tie rod end puller while loosening the nut.
Step 8: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle
- Install the tie rod end puller over the tie rod stud and steering knuckle.
- Tighten the puller with the correct socket from your puller kit until the stud pops loose from the knuckle.
- A steering knuckle is the heavy metal part the wheel hub and steering parts attach to.
- If needed, tap the side of the steering knuckle lightly with a hammer while the puller is tight.
- Do not hit the threaded stud if you are trying to remove it cleanly.
Step 9: Count Turns and Remove the Old Tie Rod End
- Turn the old outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the inner tie rod.
- Count the exact number of turns during removal.
- Write the number down.
- This helps install the new tie rod end close to the old position.
Step 10: Install the New Tie Rod End
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand.
- Use the same number of turns you counted during removal.
- Line it up with your paint marker mark and measurement as closely as possible.
- Do not tighten the jam nut yet.
Step 11: Attach the Tie Rod End to the Steering Knuckle
- Insert the new tie rod stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Install the new castle nut by hand first so it does not cross-thread.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the tie rod stud nut to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
- If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until the hole lines up. Do not loosen the nut to align the hole.
- Install the new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers, then bend the pin ends over the nut.
Step 12: Tighten the Jam Nut
- Hold the outer tie rod end steady with an adjustable wrench.
- Use a 22mm wrench to tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod end.
- Tighten the jam nut securely to Torque to 75 Nm (55 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Grease the Tie Rod End if Required
- If the new tie rod end has a grease fitting, use a grease gun with chassis grease to add grease until the boot just begins to swell.
- A grease fitting is a small metal nipple where a grease gun attaches.
- Do not overfill the boot because it can split.
Step 14: Reinstall the Wheel
- Place the wheel back onto the hub.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first.
- Use a 19mm socket and ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 15: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the truck to the ground.
- Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked. Listen for rubbing, popping, or binding.
- ✅ Test drive slowly on a quiet road. The steering wheel may be slightly off-center until alignment is performed.
- ✅ Schedule a professional front wheel alignment as soon as possible.
- ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 19mm socket and torque wrench.
- ✅ If the steering feels loose, pulls hard, or the truck wanders, stop driving and recheck the repair.
