This repair replaces a worn outer tie rod end, which connects the steering rack to the front wheel knuckle and helps control toe alignment. A bad tie rod end can cause looseness, clunking, uneven tire wear, or wandering steering.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your F-150 on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🛞 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • 🧼 Spray penetrating oil on the outer tie rod jam nut and tie rod stud nut. Let it soak for several minutes.
  • 📏 A jam nut is the locking nut on the threaded tie rod. It holds the outer tie rod end in position.
  • 📌 Count the turns when removing the old tie rod end. This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive to an alignment shop.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Break lugs loose before lifting.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Truck

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your F-150 at the front frame/jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching as a backup, but do not rely on it alone.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use the 21mm socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and set it flat under the frame as an added safety backup.

Step 4: Mark the Tie Rod Position

  • Use a paint marker to mark the threads where the outer tie rod end meets the jam nut.
  • Use a tape measure to measure from the center of the tie rod stud to a fixed point on the inner tie rod.
  • Write this measurement down.
  • This does not replace alignment, but it helps keep the steering close.

Step 5: Loosen the Jam Nut

  • Use a 22mm wrench on the outer tie rod end flats if needed.
  • Use a 24mm wrench to loosen the jam nut about one turn.
  • Do not spin the jam nut far away from its original position.
  • One turn is enough.

Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the tie rod stud castle nut.
  • A cotter pin is a small safety pin that keeps the nut from backing off.
  • Discard the old cotter pin. Do not reuse it.

Step 7: Remove the Tie Rod Stud Nut

  • Use an 18mm socket to remove the tie rod end nut from the steering knuckle.
  • If the stud spins, apply upward pressure under the tie rod end with a ball joint separator fork while loosening the nut.

Step 8: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Knuckle

  • Install the tie rod end puller over the tie rod stud and steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the puller screw until the stud pops free from the knuckle.
  • If using a ball joint separator fork, tap it with a hammer until the tie rod separates.
  • Do not damage the steering knuckle or brake components.

Step 9: Count and Remove the Old Tie Rod End

  • Use your hand or a 22mm wrench to turn the old outer tie rod end counterclockwise off the inner tie rod.
  • Count each full turn as you remove it.
  • Write the number down. Install the new one the same number of turns.

Step 10: Install the New Tie Rod End

  • Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand.
  • Use the same number of turns counted during removal.
  • Line it up with your paint mark and measurement as closely as possible.
  • Make sure the tie rod end stud points into the steering knuckle without twisting the boot.

Step 11: Install the Tie Rod Stud into the Knuckle

  • Insert the tie rod stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Install the new nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the tie rod end nut to Torque to 85 Nm (63 ft-lbs).
  • If the nut is a castle nut, continue tightening only enough to align the cotter pin hole. Do not loosen it to align the hole.

Step 12: Install the New Cotter Pin

  • Use needle-nose pliers to install the new cotter pin through the stud hole.
  • Bend the cotter pin ends around the nut so it cannot fall out.

Step 13: Tighten the Jam Nut

  • Use a 22mm wrench to hold the tie rod end steady.
  • Use a 24mm wrench to tighten the jam nut against the new outer tie rod end.
  • Tighten the jam nut firmly to Torque to 85 Nm (63 ft-lbs) if using a crowfoot-compatible torque setup.
  • If you do not have the correct torque setup, tighten it securely and have the alignment shop verify it.

Step 14: Grease the Tie Rod End if Applicable

  • If the new tie rod end has a grease fitting, use a grease gun with chassis grease to add grease until the boot just begins to swell.
  • Do not overfill the boot.
  • If the new tie rod end is sealed, skip this step.

Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back on the hub.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 16: Lower and Torque the Wheel

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your F-150 until the tire touches the ground.
  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked. Listen for binding or clunking.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first. Make sure the steering wheel returns normally and the truck tracks safely.
  • ✅ Schedule a professional wheel alignment immediately. Tie rod replacement changes toe angle.
  • ✅ Recheck the tie rod jam nut and lug nut torque after a short drive.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is badly off-center, do not keep driving except directly to alignment service.
