📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your F-150 on a flat, solid surface.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Keep the steering wheel straight before lifting the truck.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the outer tie rod jam nut and the tie rod stud nut. Penetrating oil helps loosen rusty threaded parts.
  • Use a paint marker to mark the tie rod position before removal. This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive carefully to an alignment shop.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen lugs before lifting.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your F-150 at the front crossmember or approved front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the approved frame support points.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
  • Lightly shake the truck to confirm it is stable before working near the wheel.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat under the frame as a backup safety measure.

Step 4: Mark and Measure the Tie Rod Position

  • Use a paint marker to mark where the outer tie rod end meets the inner tie rod threads.
  • Use a tape measure to measure from the center of the tie rod stud to a fixed point on the inner tie rod, then write it down.
  • A jam nut is the lock nut that holds the outer tie rod in position on the threaded inner tie rod.
  • Count turns during removal.

Step 5: Loosen the Jam Nut

  • Use a metric open-end wrench set on the jam nut behind the outer tie rod end.
  • Use an adjustable wrench to hold the outer tie rod end steady if needed.
  • Turn the jam nut loose about 1/4 turn only. Do not move it far from its original position.

Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin and Retaining Nut

  • Use pliers to straighten the cotter pin ends at the tie rod stud.
  • Use side cutters or pliers to pull the cotter pin out.
  • A cotter pin is a small locking pin that prevents the nut from backing off.
  • Use the correct-size wrench from your metric open-end wrench set to remove the tie rod end retaining nut from the steering knuckle.

Step 7: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle

  • Install the tie rod end puller (specialty) over the tie rod end and steering knuckle connection.
  • A tie rod end puller is a tool that safely presses the tapered stud out of the steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the puller with the correct wrench from your metric open-end wrench set until the tie rod stud pops free.
  • If needed, tap the side of the steering knuckle lightly with a hammer while the puller is under tension.
  • Do not hit the threaded stud directly.

Step 8: Unscrew the Old Outer Tie Rod End

  • Use an adjustable wrench to turn the old outer tie rod end counterclockwise off the inner tie rod.
  • Count the exact number of turns needed to remove it.
  • Write down the number of turns.
  • Use a wire brush to clean the inner tie rod threads.

Step 9: Install the New Outer Tie Rod End

  • Apply a light coat of anti-seize compound to the inner tie rod threads.
  • Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand the same number of turns you counted during removal.
  • Use an adjustable wrench only after the threads are started by hand.
  • Line up the new tie rod end with your paint mark and measurement.

Step 10: Attach the Tie Rod End to the Steering Knuckle

  • Insert the new tie rod end stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Install the new retaining nut by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the correct-size socket or wrench from your metric open-end wrench set and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the retaining nut.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs)
  • If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until it lines up. Do not loosen the nut to align the cotter pin.

Step 11: Install the New Cotter Pin

  • Slide the new cotter pin through the hole in the tie rod stud.
  • Use pliers to bend the cotter pin ends around the nut.
  • Make sure the cotter pin cannot fall out.

Step 12: Tighten the Jam Nut

  • Hold the new outer tie rod end steady with an adjustable wrench.
  • Use a wrench from your metric open-end wrench set to tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod end.
  • Torque to 85 Nm (63 ft-lbs)

Step 13: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back onto the hub.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 14: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Lower your F-150 fully to the ground.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked. Listen for clunks and check that the steering feels smooth.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly at first. If the steering wheel is off-center or the truck pulls, drive carefully and avoid highway speeds.
  • ✅ Get a professional front-end alignment as soon as possible. Tie rod replacement changes toe alignment, which affects tire wear and steering stability.
  • ✅ Recheck the tie rod jam nut and cotter pin after the first short drive.
