🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel.
- Loosen each lug nut about half a turn while the tire is still on the ground.
- Do not remove them yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Truck
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame area to raise the front of your F-150.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame rails.
- Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands.
- Gently shake the truck to make sure it is stable before working.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Pull the wheel off and lay it flat under the frame as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Mark the Tie Rod Position
- Use a wire brush to clean the exposed tie rod threads.
- Use a paint marker to mark where the jam nut sits on the inner tie rod.
- The jam nut is the lock nut that keeps the outer tie rod end from turning.
- Use a measuring tape to measure from the center of the tie rod stud to a fixed point on the inner tie rod.
- Write the measurement down.
- This helps keep alignment close.
Step 5: Loosen the Jam Nut
- Hold the outer tie rod end steady with an adjustable wrench.
- Use a 21mm open-end wrench to loosen the jam nut about one turn.
- Do not move the jam nut far from your paint mark.
Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten the bent legs of the cotter pin.
- A cotter pin is the small locking pin that keeps the nut from backing off.
- Pull the cotter pin out and throw it away.
Step 7: Remove the Tie Rod Stud Nut
- Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the nut from the tie rod stud.
- If the stud spins, hold it steady with an 18mm wrench while removing the nut.
Step 8: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle
- The steering knuckle is the heavy metal part that the wheel hub and steering parts attach to.
- Install the tie rod end puller over the tie rod end and steering knuckle.
- A tie rod end puller is a tool that presses the tapered stud out safely.
- Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to tighten the puller until the tie rod stud pops loose.
- If needed, tap the side of the steering knuckle with a ball peen hammer while the puller is tight.
- Keep fingers away from the joint.
Step 9: Remove the Old Outer Tie Rod End
- Turn the old outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the inner tie rod.
- Count the exact number of turns until it comes off.
- Write that number down.
- Counting turns helps rough alignment.
Step 10: Install the New Outer Tie Rod End
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand.
- Turn it the same number of turns you counted during removal.
- Use the measuring tape to compare the new position with your original measurement.
- Adjust it as close as possible to the original measurement.
Step 11: Install the Tie Rod Stud into the Steering Knuckle
- Insert the new tie rod stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Start the new nut by hand first so the threads do not get damaged.
- Use an 18mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the tie rod stud nut to Torque to 111 Nm (82 ft-lbs).
- If the nut uses castle slots, tighten slightly more until the cotter pin hole lines up. Do not loosen the nut to align the hole.
Step 12: Install the New Cotter Pin
- Slide the new cotter pin through the hole in the tie rod stud.
- Use needle-nose pliers to bend the cotter pin legs around the nut.
- This locks the nut in place.
Step 13: Tighten the Jam Nut
- Hold the outer tie rod end steady with an adjustable wrench.
- Use a 21mm open-end wrench to tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod end.
- Use a torque wrench with a wrench adapter if available and tighten the jam nut to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
- If you do not have a torque wrench adapter, tighten it firmly with the 21mm open-end wrench and have the alignment shop verify it.
Step 14: Grease the Tie Rod End if Needed
- If the new part has a grease fitting, attach the grease gun.
- Pump in chassis grease until the rubber dust boot just begins to swell.
- Stop as soon as the boot starts to expand.
- Too much grease can split the boot.
Step 15: Reinstall the Wheel
- Put the wheel back onto the hub.
- Start all lug nuts by hand.
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 16: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the truck until the tire just touches the ground and cannot spin.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
- Lower your F-150 completely and remove the floor jack.

- ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked. Make sure it moves smoothly.
- ✅ Check that the tie rod end, jam nut, cotter pin, and wheel are secure.
