🔧 Highlander - Outer Tie Rod End Replacement

This procedure replaces one outer tie rod end, the steering joint located beside the front wheel. A worn joint can cause steering looseness, uneven tire wear, or knocking over bumps.

Assumption: “Tie rod end” means the outer tie rod end, not the inner tie rod.

  • ⚠️ A professional wheel alignment is required immediately after replacement.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Highlander on level, solid ground and point the steering wheel straight ahead.
  • Shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
  • Compare the new tie rod end with the old one before disassembly. The stud, thread direction, and overall shape must match.
  • Arrange a four-wheel alignment before driving any significant distance.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel

  • Use the 21mm lug-nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the five lug nuts about one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts while the tire is still supporting the vehicle.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack under the specified front-center jacking point to raise your Highlander.
  • Place a 3-ton jack stand beneath the reinforced front subframe support point on the side being repaired.
  • Lower the vehicle carefully onto the stand and leave the floor jack lightly touching the lifting point as a backup.
  • Use the 21mm lug-nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts and wheel.

Step 3: Record the Tie Rod Position

  • Use the wire brush to clean the exposed threads between the outer tie rod end and its jam nut.
  • Apply penetrating-oil spray to the jam nut and tie rod stud nut. Allow it to soak for several minutes.
  • Use the steel tape measure to measure from a fixed point on the inner tie rod to the center of the outer tie rod stud. Record the measurement.
  • Use the paint marker to mark the jam nut position and a straight reference line across the tie rod.
  • Accurate marks help preserve the original toe setting.

Step 4: Loosen the Jam Nut

  • The jam nut locks the outer tie rod end onto the threaded inner tie rod.
  • Hold the outer tie rod end with the 19mm combination wrench.
  • Use the 22mm combination wrench to loosen the jam nut approximately one-quarter turn.
  • Do not move the jam nut farther than necessary.

Step 5: Remove the Retaining Nut

  • Use the needle-nose pliers to straighten and remove the cotter pin from the tie rod stud.
  • Discard the cotter pin. Never straighten and reuse it.
  • Use the 19mm six-point socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to loosen the retaining nut.
  • Leave the nut threaded onto the stud by two or three turns while fitting the puller.

Step 6: Separate the Tie Rod End

  • A tie-rod-end puller presses the tapered stud out without damaging the steering knuckle.
  • Position the outer tie-rod-end puller around the steering knuckle and stud.
  • Use the correctly sized puller drive with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet to tighten the puller until the stud releases.
  • Use the 19mm six-point socket to remove the loosened retaining nut completely.
  • Lift the tie rod stud out of the steering knuckle.

Step 7: Remove the Old Tie Rod End

  • Use the paint marker to place a final reference mark at the old tie rod end’s installed position.
  • Unscrew the outer tie rod end by hand while counting every complete turn.
  • Write down the exact number of turns, including any partial turn.
  • Do not rotate the jam nut after removing the old tie rod end.

Step 8: Install the New Tie Rod End

  • Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand using exactly the same number of turns counted during removal.
  • Use the steel tape measure to compare the new stud-center measurement with the recorded measurement.
  • Align the new tie rod stud with the steering knuckle while keeping the tie rod body close to its original angle.
  • Insert the tapered stud fully into the steering knuckle by hand.

Step 9: Tighten the Tie Rod Stud Nut

  • Install the new retaining nut onto the stud by hand.
  • Use the 19mm six-point socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the nut to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
  • If the cotter-pin holes do not align, use the 19mm six-point socket and torque wrench to tighten the nut slightly farther until the next slot aligns. Never loosen the nut to align it.
  • Install the new cotter pin through the stud with the needle-nose pliers, then bend both ends securely around the nut.

Step 10: Tighten the Jam Nut

  • Hold the new tie rod end with the 19mm combination wrench so it cannot twist.
  • Use the 22mm combination wrench to tighten the jam nut firmly against the outer tie rod end.
  • Use the appropriate crowfoot attachment with the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench, if available, to tighten the jam nut to 74 Nm (55 ft-lbs).
  • Confirm the paint marks and recorded measurement remain aligned.

Step 11: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel onto the hub and install all five lug nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm lug-nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stand, and lower the tire to the ground.
  • Use the 21mm lug-nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock while parked. Confirm there is no binding, knocking, or contact with nearby components.
  • ✅ Check that the cotter pin is installed and the jam nut is fully seated against the tie rod end.
  • ✅ Drive slowly for a brief test in a safe area. Stop immediately if the steering wheel is severely off-center or the vehicle pulls sharply.
  • ✅ Have a professional four-wheel alignment performed immediately. Replacing a tie rod end changes the front toe angle, which controls whether the tires point inward or outward.
  • ✅ Recheck the wheel-lug torque at 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
