Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about 1/2 turn while the tire is still on the ground.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loose first, lift second.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack at the front frame lift point to raise the side you are working on.
  • Place a jack stand under the frame, then slowly lower your Expedition onto the stand.
  • Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before removing the wheel.

  • Use a 21mm wrench or 21mm socket to remove the castle nut from the stud at the steering knuckle.
  • If the cotter pin is rusty and breaks, pull the remaining pieces out with needle-nose pliers.

Step 7: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle

  • Install the tie rod end puller over the steering knuckle and tie rod stud.
  • A tie rod end puller is a small press tool that safely pushes the tapered stud out of the steering knuckle.
  • Tighten the puller with a 21mm wrench or the tool-specified socket until the stud pops free.
  • Do not hit the aluminum steering knuckle directly with a hammer.

Step 8: Unscrew the Old Outer Tie Rod End

  • Turn the outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the inner tie rod.
  • Count every full turn and partial turn as it comes off.

  • Record the exact number of turns.

Step 9: Install the New Outer Tie Rod End

  • Install the new cotter pin with needle-nose pliers and bend the ends around the nut.

Step 11: Tighten the Jam Nut

  • Hold the inner tie rod steady with an adjustable wrench.
  • Use an 18mm wrench or 21mm wrench to tighten the jam nut against the new outer tie rod end.
  • Tighten the jam nut to Torque to 85 Nm (63 ft-lbs) if your torque wrench and access allow proper positioning.
  • If using a standard wrench due to limited access, tighten it firmly while keeping the tie rod end aligned.

Step 12: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Place the wheel back on the hub.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use a 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 13: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack to raise your Expedition slightly off the jack stand.
  • Remove the jack stand, then lower the tire onto the ground.
