🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen before lifting for stability.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Tacoma at the front crossmember.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame support points.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Give the truck a light shake to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Wheel
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and set it flat under the frame as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Clean and Mark the Tie Rod Position
- Use the wire brush to clean the outer tie rod threads and jam nut area.
- Spray the threads and jam nut with penetrating oil.
- Use the paint marker to mark where the jam nut sits on the inner tie rod threads.
- Use the tape measure to measure from the jam nut face to the center of the tie rod end stud.
- Write this measurement down.
- This helps preserve alignment enough to drive.
Step 5: Loosen the Jam Nut
- The jam nut locks the outer tie rod end in place on the threaded inner tie rod.
- Use the 22mm open-end wrench on the jam nut.
- Use the 19mm open-end wrench on the outer tie rod flats if needed to hold it steady.
- Loosen the jam nut about one turn, but do not move it far from your paint mark.
Step 6: Remove the Cotter Pin
- A cotter pin is a small bent safety pin that keeps the castle nut from backing off.
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull the cotter pin out of the tie rod stud.
- Discard the old cotter pin. Do not reuse it.
Step 7: Remove the Castle Nut
- A castle nut has slots on top so a cotter pin can pass through it.
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to loosen the castle nut.
- Remove the nut from the tie rod stud.
Step 8: Separate the Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle
- Install the tie rod end puller over the tie rod stud and steering knuckle.
- Tighten the puller with the appropriate drive from your tool kit until the stud pops free.
- If using a ball joint separator, place it between the tie rod end and knuckle, then press the joint loose.
- Do not hit the threaded stud with a hammer unless the old part is being discarded and the knuckle is protected.
- The pop sound is normal.
Step 9: Count Turns and Remove the Old Tie Rod End
- Turn the outer tie rod end counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the inner tie rod.
- Count the exact number of full turns as it comes off.
- Write the number down.
- Leave the jam nut close to your paint mark.
Step 10: Install the New Tie Rod End
- Thread the new outer tie rod end onto the inner tie rod by hand.
- Use the same number of turns counted during removal.
- Use the tape measure to compare the new stud center position to your original measurement.
- Adjust slightly by hand if needed so it matches as closely as possible.
- Hand-thread first to avoid damage.
Step 11: Attach the Tie Rod End to the Steering Knuckle
- Insert the new tie rod stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install the new castle nut by hand first.
- Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs to tighten the castle nut to Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
- If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until the slot lines up. Do not loosen it to line up the pin.
- Install the new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers and bend the ends around the nut.
Step 12: Tighten the Jam Nut
- Use the 19mm open-end wrench to hold the outer tie rod end steady.
- Use the 22mm open-end wrench to tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod end.
- Tighten the jam nut firmly by hand-tool feel if a crowfoot torque setup is not available.
- If using a torque wrench with the correct crowfoot adapter, tighten the jam nut to Torque to 74 Nm (55 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Grease the Tie Rod End if Required
- If the new tie rod end has a grease fitting, use a chassis grease tube with a grease gun to add grease until the boot just begins to swell.
- If the new tie rod end is sealed and has no fitting, skip this step.
- Do not overfill the rubber boot.
Step 14: Reinstall the Wheel
- Place the wheel back onto the hub.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 15: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Tacoma slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the truck until the tire touches the ground enough to prevent spinning.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
- Fully lower the truck and remove the floor jack.
