📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Camry on level ground, select Park, and apply the parking brake.
- 🌡️ Switch off the engine and allow the engine compartment to cool.
- 🔑 Turn off all electrical accessories and keep the ignition off.
- 📍 Open the hood and locate the MAF sensor on top of the air-cleaner housing, beside the large black intake hose.
- 🧰 An OBD-II scan tool plugs into the diagnostic connector beneath the driver-side dashboard and reads or clears engine fault codes.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Inspect the replacement sensor
- Wear the safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
- Confirm the new sensor matches the original sensor’s connector and mounting shape.
- Confirm a clean sealing O-ring is installed on the new sensor.
- Do not touch the sensing elements extending into the airflow passage.
Step 2: Disconnect the electrical connector
- Press the locking tab on the MAF sensor connector with your fingers.
- Pull the connector straight away from the sensor while holding its plastic body.
- Do not pull on the wires. If it resists, press the locking tab again and gently wiggle the connector.
- Inspect the connector for bent terminals, moisture, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
Step 3: Remove the original MAF sensor
- Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two sensor retaining screws.
- Keep both screws clean and secure for reuse.
- Lift the sensor straight upward from the air-cleaner housing.
- Use the clean lint-free cloth to wipe around the mounting opening without pushing debris into the intake.
- Cover the opening while inspecting the sensor.
Step 4: Install the new MAF sensor
- Remove any temporary covering from the mounting opening.
- Hold the new sensor by its plastic body and align it in the same direction as the original.
- Insert it straight into the air-cleaner housing without forcing or twisting it.
- Make sure the sealing O-ring sits evenly and is not pinched.
Step 5: Tighten the retaining screws
- Start both retaining screws by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the Phillips #2 inch-pound torque screwdriver to tighten both screws evenly.
- Torque to 1.7 Nm (15 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the screws because the plastic air-cleaner housing can crack.
Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Push the electrical connector straight onto the new sensor until its lock clicks.
- Gently pull on the connector body to confirm it is locked.
- Check that the wiring is not stretched, pinched, or touching a hot component.
Step 7: Clear stored fault codes
- Connect the OBD-II diagnostic scan tool to the diagnostic connector under the driver-side dashboard.
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Use the scan tool’s Diagnostics > Engine > Read Codes function and record any stored codes.
- Use Diagnostics > Engine > Clear Codes to erase MAF-related codes after confirming the installation is correct.
- Turn the ignition off and disconnect the scan tool.
✅ After Repair
- 🚗 Start the engine and let it idle for approximately five minutes. A slightly uneven idle for a short time may occur while the engine computer readjusts.
- 👂 Listen for a hissing sound around the sensor and intake hose, which could indicate an air leak.
- 💡 Confirm the check-engine light remains off.
- 🛣️ Take a gentle 10-15 minute test drive and check for smooth acceleration, stable idle, and normal throttle response.
- 🔍 Recheck for diagnostic codes with the OBD-II scan tool if the warning light returns.
- ⚠️ If codes P0100-P0104 return, inspect the connector, wiring, air filter housing, and intake duct before replacing other parts.
