🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Open the hood and use the 10mm socket with the 1/4-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the clamp from the negative post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
Step 2: Locate the MAP Sensor
- Stand at the front of your Optima and locate the plastic intake manifold behind the throttle body.
- Find the small electrical sensor inserted directly into the intake manifold. It has one electrical connector and one retaining bolt.
- The MAP sensor measures intake-manifold pressure so the engine computer can calculate airflow.
Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Connector
- Press the connector’s locking tab with your finger and pull the connector straight away from the sensor.
- If the tab is difficult to release, use the plastic trim pick gently. Do not pry against the wires.
- Inspect the connector for bent terminals, moisture, oil, or damaged wiring.
Step 4: Remove the Old MAP Sensor
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet to remove the sensor retaining bolt.
- Hold the sensor body and gently twist while pulling it straight out of the intake manifold.
- Confirm that the old rubber seal came out with the sensor.
- Do not scrape or push debris into the open sensor port.
Step 5: Install the New MAP Sensor
- Confirm the new MAP sensor has an undamaged seal fitted in the correct groove.
- Insert the sensor straight into the intake manifold. Press only on its plastic body.
- Install the retaining bolt by hand first to prevent crossed threads.
- Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolt to 7.8-9.8 Nm (69-87 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the plastic sensor.
Step 6: Reconnect the Sensor and Battery
- Push the electrical connector onto the sensor until its locking tab clicks.
- Gently pull on the connector body to confirm it is locked. Do not pull the wires.
- Place the negative battery clamp back onto the battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet to tighten the clamp securely without crushing it.
Step 7: Clear Codes and Check Operation
- Connect the OBD-II scan tool to the diagnostic port beneath the driver’s side dashboard.
- Switch the ignition on without starting the engine and use the scan tool’s Diagnostics > Engine > Clear Trouble Codes command.
- Start the engine and let it idle without pressing the accelerator for five minutes.
- Use the scan tool to verify that the MAP reading changes smoothly when the engine is gently accelerated.

- ✅ Confirm that the engine idles smoothly and the check-engine light remains off.
- 👂 Listen for a hissing sound around the sensor, which could indicate a pinched or missing seal.
- 🚗 Take a 10-15 minute drive using light and moderate acceleration.
- 🔍 Scan again for pending trouble codes after the drive.
