🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Sensor
- Use the hood release inside the cab, then lift the hood and support it securely.
- Find the air filter box on the passenger side of the engine bay.
- The MAF sensor is installed in the plastic intake tube near the air filter box and has an electrical connector plugged into it.
- Take a photo before unplugging anything.
Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post.
- Wrap the cable end with a clean shop towel and position it so it cannot touch the battery post.
Step 3: Unplug the MAF Sensor Connector
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Look for the connector lock on the MAF sensor plug.
- If there is a red or gray safety tab, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently slide the lock back.
- Press the connector release tab with your thumb and pull the connector straight off the sensor.
- Do not pull on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector body.
Step 4: Remove the Old MAF Sensor
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the two small screws holding the MAF sensor to the intake tube.
- Keep the screws in a safe place if the new sensor does not include new screws.
- Gently pull the sensor straight out of the intake tube.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle it slightly by hand. Do not pry hard against the plastic intake tube.
Step 5: Install the New MAF Sensor
- Compare the new mass air flow sensor to the old one before installing it.
- Make sure the sealing area is clean. Use a clean shop towel to wipe dust from the outside of the intake tube opening.
- Insert the new sensor straight into the intake tube in the same direction as the old sensor.
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to install the two sensor screws.
- Tighten the screws snugly by hand. These are small screws in plastic, so do not overtighten.
- Torque to approximately 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs) if using an inch-pound torque tool.
Step 6: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the connector straight onto the new MAF sensor until it clicks.
- If equipped, slide the safety lock back into place using your fingers or a small flathead screwdriver.
- Lightly tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
Step 7: Reconnect the Battery
- Remove the clean shop towel from the negative battery cable.
- Place the negative cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the terminal clamp.
- Torque to 5-7 Nm (44-62 in-lbs) if using a torque tool.
- Make sure the cable does not rotate by hand after tightening.
Step 8: Start the Engine
- Start your 1500 and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- The idle may change briefly while the engine computer relearns the new sensor reading.
- Listen for air leaks around the intake tube. A leak may sound like a hiss.
- If the check engine light was on, it may need several drive cycles to turn off, or it can be cleared with a scan tool.
