🔧 RAV4 - Mass Air Flow Sensor Replacement

The mass air flow sensor, often called the MAF sensor, measures how much air enters the engine so the engine computer can calculate fuel delivery. On your RAV4, it is mounted in the engine air cleaner outlet tube near the air filter box and is a beginner-friendly replacement.

• Park your RAV4 on level ground and set the parking brake.
• Press the POWER button OFF and make sure the instrument cluster does not show READY.
• Open the hood and support it securely.
• An OBD2 scan tool plugs into the diagnostic port under the dash and can clear fault codes after the repair.
• Take a photo before unplugging anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the MAF Sensor

• Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
• Stand at the front of your RAV4 and find the black engine air filter box on the driver-side area of the engine bay.
• The MAF sensor is the small sensor installed in the air intake tube right next to the air filter box, with an electrical connector plugged into it.

Step 2: Unplug the Electrical Connector

• Use your thumb to press the locking tab on the MAF sensor electrical connector.
• If the connector is stuck, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently help lift the lock tab while pulling the connector straight back.
• Do not pull on the wires. Pull on the plastic connector body only.
• Gentle pressure prevents broken tabs.

Step 3: Remove the MAF Sensor Screws

• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the MAF sensor to the intake tube.
• Keep the screws in a safe spot because they are small and easy to drop.
• If reusing the original screws, inspect them for rust or damaged heads before reinstalling.

Step 4: Remove the Old MAF Sensor

• Pull the MAF sensor straight out of the intake tube by hand.
• Do not twist hard or pry against the plastic intake tube.
• Check that the old sensor seal or O-ring came out with the sensor and did not stay stuck in the intake opening.

Step 5: Install the New MAF Sensor

• Line up the new mass air flow sensor with the opening in the intake tube.
• Push it straight into place by hand until it sits flat against the mounting surface.
• Do not touch the sensing element inside the sensor.
• Flat seating prevents air leaks.

Step 6: Reinstall the Screws

• Start both screws by hand first so they do not cross-thread.
• Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to snug the screws evenly.
• Torque to 1.7 Nm (15 in-lbs) if using a small inch-pound torque tool; otherwise tighten gently by hand only.
• Do not overtighten. The intake tube is plastic and can crack.

Step 7: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

• Push the electrical connector straight onto the MAF sensor until it clicks.
• Lightly tug on the connector body by hand to make sure it is locked in place.

Step 8: Clear Codes If Needed

• Plug the OBD2 scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver-side lower dash.
• Turn the vehicle ON without pressing the brake pedal, or follow your scan tool’s prompt.
• Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear stored MAF-related codes such as P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103, or P0104.
• Turn the vehicle OFF after clearing codes.

• Start your RAV4 and make sure the instrument cluster shows READY.
• Let the engine cycle on and off normally for a few minutes. Hybrid operation may shut the engine off by design.
• Check that the check engine light stays off.
• Take a short 10-15 minute drive with gentle acceleration.
• If the warning light returns, recheck the connector and inspect the air intake tube for loose clamps, cracks, or an improperly seated air filter cover.
